अन्योन्यपरिगृहीताः पक्षिमेषवृषादयः ।
प्रहरन्ते कृतपणास् तं वदन्ति समाह्वयम् ॥

anyonyaparigṛhītāḥ pakṣimeṣavṛṣādayaḥ | praharante kṛtapaṇās taṃ vadanti samāhvayam ||

Those who are mutually bound—such as birds, beasts, and other creatures—when engaged in conflict, even if armed, are declared to call for resolution through invitation, not condemnation.

द्वन्द्वयुद्धेन यः कश्चिदवसादं प्राप्नुयात् ।
तत्स्वामिना पणो देयो यस्तत्र परिकल्पितः ॥२८.२

dvandvayuddhena yaḥ kaścid avasādam avāpnuyāt | tatsvāminā paṇo deyo yaḥ tatra parikalpitaḥ ||

When a being suffers loss through dualistic conflict, the wager ordained in that context shall be returned by the sovereign authority overseeing the contest.
