Jupiter in Vedic Scriptures

A king had seven sons. One day, sādhus (holy mendicants) came begging for alms, but the wives of these sons turned them away empty handed. Jupiter became angry with them, and as a result, the prosperity of the kingdom diminished.

The youngest wife visited a sage to ask for a solution to this problem. The sage advised her to fast on Thursdays and to give alms to spiritual people. The master also suggested that if any one of the girl's husbands had gone to a foreign country, the wife should create two human figures and place them behind her door, which would ensure the safe return of her husband.

The youngest wife did so, as her husband has gone on a tour to a foreign country.

The other six sons were also gone on a tour to a neighboring country. The youngest wife did the ritual, as instructed by the sage. The youngest son was in a country where the king died. The king had no son. In order to find a suitable successor, a garland was put on the horn of a female elephant and whoever was garlanded by the elephant would be king. The elephant put the garland on the youngest son's neck. He became king.

The youngest wife's spiritual discipline brought prosperity to the kingdom.

The other six wives also repented and began to do Vara Pūjaā (worshipping Jupiter on Thursdays) for Jupiter to bless their families and kingdom as well.

Jupiter's impact is to impart religious satisfaction, peaceful contentment, and a sense of inner fulfillment. Physical existence is usually easy under Jupiter, one's desire to live, to do social work, to speak and undertake activities in the name of the Truth. Such an individual strives to spiritualize his life.

The natives can grow prosperous, their life will be fruitful, and they will attain satisfaction from their prosperity. An important attribute of the Jupiterian influence is its concern for the welfare of humanity. This includes spiritual as well as physical welfare.

Jupitereans' approach to life is benevolent and positive. They naturally feel God is present in the whole of creation and in all beings. They find great fulfillment in working for society and for humanity in general.

Sagittarius natives have an expansive and pure heart, as well as deep spiritual inclination. They will always keep active and engaged in work and hate external pomp. They are honest, humble, free from

hypocrisy. They are generally generous and conventional.

They can be athletes, but not too competitive; they like the outdoors, wilderness, and enjoy nature more than any other sign. Enthusiastic, they create many friends.

But their mind may be too discriminating and fault finding; this may not enable them to see their own unawareness. Their over-optimism can sometimes make them take decisions too lightly and impulsively or without awareness of the actual reality of their decision.

Jupiter Nakşatras: Mūla, Pūrvāșāda, Uttarāșāda

Tendencies of a person born under Mula

Mula means 'root' in Sanskrit; the symbol of the naksatra is a bunch of roots tied together. It shows everything of basic nature; it connotes the idea of foundation, commencement from the very bottom. The naksatra has the power to ruin, destroy and break things apart, and reveals the necessary dissolution that precedes a new life on a new basis, on a more spiritual basis.

If the native feels pain in his life, it is seldom to inspire him to look for something higher. Mūla inspires the person to seek for divine help.

You can become very devoted to your spiritual path and come to spiritualize yourself completely. You will be successful in financial matters and materially comfortable. You can have a deep spiritual nature and an inquisitive mind, which enjoys exploring the roots of any subject.

Energy Centers and Sagittarius

The Sahasrara Cakra - Fostering Gratitude

There are seven major energy centers in our body, called cakras in Sanskrit. They are directly connected to our emotions and impact different aspects of our personality and the way we relate to ourselves, others, and to Existence.

Each planet resonates with a particular energy center in the body. The expanded characteristics of Jupiter in Sagittarius are connected to sahasrāra cakra, located at the top of the head. Sahasrara flowers when you start giving gratitude towards the whole, existence, regardless of what happens to you. This unfolds with beautiful devotion, trust and a deep love for life. This devotion can directly fulfill the native who has a natural capacity for feeling fulfilled and enjoying life to its fullest.

Depression can be a side effect from the native's not letting this aspect of himself grow. The constant

Moon in Sagittarius 27

Page 14

discontentment that blocks this cakra brings emotional restlessness and ultimately drains his system, creating chronic depression.

You should keep an eye on your diet, which can be extreme when depression or low moods assail you. Sagittarius can be prone to bulimia and seeking sweets to counterbalance a lack of affection.

To keep sahasrāra balanced, to develop awareness and experience how you can flower by sharing your generosity, optimism will benefit you. You can give this teaching a try today: 'suffocate others with your gratitude'. This attitude will give contentment and the expansion you are seeking.

A balanced sahasrara cakra will manifest a broad and generous personality, one that radiates bliss.

Sagittarius and Āyurveda: Understand your Constitution

In a birth chart, many influences have to be considered to find out one's body type. Consulting an experienced Ayurvedic doctor will help you to understand your body constitution.

Generally, the Ayurvedic dośa (body constitution) related to Sagittarius is kapha.

Let's use this scale:

If you experience symptoms such as lethargy, a feeling of heaviness, nausea, chills, looseness of the limbs, coughing, mucus discharges, breathing difficulties and a tendency to sleep too much and high cholesterol, you may be suffering from kapha imbalance. Other symptoms can be inertia, congestion, stagnation and circulation problems. There may be a tendency toward obesity and boredom, depression, apathy, laziness, and mental dullness may be present.

If you are easy going, forgiving, physically strong, stable and reliable, slow to anger, active and positive minded, have a strong immune system, full of mental resolve, rational thinking, endurance, adaptability, long term memory, then your kapha is balanced.

Here are some of the common characteristics of people who have predominantly kapha body constitution:

O Relaxed disposition, slow paced

Loving, forgiving, compassionate personality

Stable nature, reliable

Faithful

O Physically strong and heavy and large body, enduring constitution

Physical problems generally include colds and congestion, sinus, headaches, respiratory problems including asthma and wheezing, hay fever, allergies, and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and constipation.

How to manage kapha?

Kapha people are prone to lethargy, sluggishness and overweight. Therefore, they need activity and stimulation more than the other types of constitution. Daily exercise is a must for them. Getting out of the house, walking and actively seeking new and different experiences, breaking their routine is also valuable. They should learn to be receptive to useful change, renounce impediments to progress, implement life

solutions and choose foods, mental attitudes, behaviors, exercise, relationships that can help them to balance kapha characteristics.

Food items to balance kapha:

Kapha people should consume little fried or fatty foods; avoid icy drinks, sweets or excessive amounts of bread. Butter, ice cream, cheese and milk should be avoided; they are among the worst foods which aggravates kapha. The consumption of salt should be kept in check, as it creates water retention in kapha body types.

They should enjoy plenty of fresh vegetables, raw fruits and salads. Pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes decrease kapha influences. Black pepper, ginger, cumin, chili, and some other spices provide the pungent taste; bitterness is provided by some green leafy vegetables like lettuce, endive and some green vegetables and beans provide the astringent taste, like cucumber and unripe fruits.

Meditation for Sagittarius: Contemplate beyond Perception

Jupiter natives can be benefitted through techniques that boost their body and enable them to expand their capacity to visualize. Sagittarians naturally seek the state of meditation; they can easily fall into the no-mind state. To add to it, they can also practice yoga, which will bring this state into their body, into their cells, and also boost their kapha constitution which needs dynamism. Rituals are also techniques that Sagittarians are attracted too, enabling their devotional and traditional approach to spirituality to be expressed in a beautiful way.

Duration: 10 minutes - Sit in a comfortable position and contemplate on your mind. Think about the most elevated things you know. Now, drop this thought.

Next, try to think beyond your previous thought. You might think about the galaxy beyond the solar system. When you are able to think of the galaxy, then

Moon in Sagittarius 33

Page 20

drop that thought. Go beyond the galaxy. When you continuously expand your mind to go beyond, you will be in the present moment.

Whatever you think is the ultimate in your life, drop it, and expand your thinking to something bigger. Then again your mind will automatically grasp something else. Don't allow your mind to hold that idea; drop it also. Don't bother about the ending. Just constantly keep dropping each boundary, each thought, and expanding, going beyond.

Meditate on the real Master, or the real cosmos or the real God. You may think you have grasped the essence of God, but that can never be, because your mind can never grasp the real God! If your mind can grasp God, it means your mind is greater than God. So what you grasped is not God, it is just your idea of God. Drop the idea and try again. Grasp something bigger than that.

Continuously try to grasp the ultimate truth. And you will experience the bliss of no-mind.

Nithya Yoga for You

When the dynamism is low in the person, outdoors sports like tennis, golf or even jogging can be practiced to assist Jupiter's energy. Otherwise, gentle yoga postures that work on sahasrāra cakra, as well as Sūrya Namaskär (the ancient Sun salutation) can be practiced by all natives!

Five Techniques for a Sagittarius Mind

Be aware!

If there is no bliss in your life, it means you are fast asleep. Don't make any direct effort to become blissful; nobody can succeed in that because bliss is a by-product. You cannot achieve bliss directly. You have to go via awareness. If you feel you are miserable, that simply shows one thing: it is an indication that you are unaware. So become more aware, become more meditative. As meditation deepens, misery disperses and the same energy that becomes misery becomes bliss. All that is needed is the process of awareness; it transforms energy by its nature itself.

Dive into faith

Time is up to break some of your limitations. You are so cautious about maintaining your comfort zone that you miss taking steps forward to deal with crucial responsibilities. You can remain where you are ... But are you evolving? You may be confronted to situations

Moon in Sagittarius 61

Page 28

you were carefully trying to avoid in relations and profession also. Were you trying to avoid a project, to talk in public, a conjugal crisis? Before anticipating negative scenarios about what has become inevitable, stop and dive into faith. Never forget you have it, and because you have it, nothing is impossible. Either you doubt and make it difficult, or you trust and open up to miracles.

Stand up!

You show your confidence through example, and your example makes a difference. Whatever you learn spiritually is giving you strength today to stand up even in your commercial activities and business negotiations. It is a time to get along with everyone and start fresh contacts with people who will help you on this level. Take some free time with your family, extended family, and others. They will be a very valuable support to the growth that happens inside and outside. You can succeed with finding balance between your activities, your relationships, your spiritual practices and your

62 Moon in Sagittarius

Page 29

inner connection with the Master, which is the ground on which you are standing today.

Intensity is what you need

Intensity is what you need: in spiritual understanding, in what you call external world, as a lifestyle! Intensity in the inner world is spiritual intensity, a longing to grow and to transform. Intensity in the outer world is what you need to change situations that have been bothering you for a long time. Now, you cannot bare these situations anymore, and this awakens a strong urge to improve yourself. This brings you the strength to go to any extent to shift your problems. When you are intense, you have freedom to create your destiny. You can actually even change your body with your intensity. Understand that whatever bondage you have comes from the past decisions that created it. You can break free of it!

Move with devotion

Devotion towards the master is the ultimate

Moon in Sagittarius 63

Page 30

happening in life; it paves the way to your enlightenment. When your prayer becomes gratitude, you attract more benevolence to you. Gratitude is the ultimate prayer that can bring us more than we can imagine. Real prayer is not reading prayer books, it is not offering material things to god, it is not donating money to temples; it is deep and silent gratitude to the whole of Existence for being what it is. It is the undaunted trust that Existence is taking care. Prayer is a celebration of the benevolence of Existence. When our prayer is this way, Existence responds. When Existence responds, it comes to you as more benevolence in your life. This is the virtuous cycle of prayer and blessing.
