1. Ekakshara Upanishad

[ Sutra 1 ]

एकाक्षरं त्वक्षरेऽत्रास्ति सोमे सुषुम्नायां चेह दृढी स एकः । त्वं विश्वभूर्भूतपतिः पुराणः पर्जन्य एको भुवनस्य गोप्ता ॥1॥

ekākṣaraṃ tvakṣare'trāsti some suṣumnāyāṃ ceha dṛḍhī sa ekaḥ । tvaṃ viśvabhūrbhūtapatiḥ purāṇaḥ parjanya eko bhuvanasya goptā ॥1॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — हे भगवन्! आप अक्षर (अर्थात् शाश्वत), सोम, परब्रह्म के रूप में तथा सुषुम्मा (मार्ग से सहस्त्रार चक्र) में अपनी सत्ता सहित प्रतिष्ठित एक ही अविनाशी तत्त्व एकाक्षर में स्थित रहते हैं । आप ही विश्व के कारणरूप, प्राणिमात्र के स्वामी, पुराण पुरुष एवं सभी रूपों में विद्यमान हैं । (आप ही) पर्जन्य (वर्षा आदि) के द्वारा सभी लोकों की रक्षा करने वाले हैं ॥1॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Thou art the one Imperishable in the Imperishable, conjoint with Uma. As known by means of Susumna, here (on the empirical plane), the one firm (Principle art Thou). Thou art the ancient source of the world, the Lord of beings; Thou the Parjanya (the Principle of life-giving water), the Protector of the world. ॥1॥

[ Sutra 2 ]

विश्वे निमग्नपदवीः कवीनां त्वं जातवेदो भुवनस्य नाथः । अजातमग्ने स हिरण्यरेता यज्ञस्त्वमेवैकविभुः पुराणः ॥2॥

viśve nimagnapadavīḥ kavīnāṃ tvaṃ jātavedo bhuvanasya nāthaḥ । ajātamagne sa hiraṇyaretā yajñastvamevaikavibhuḥ purāṇaḥ ॥2॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — (हे सर्वशक्तिमान्!) आप ही समस्त विश्व -वसुधा के कण-कण में जीवनी शक्ति के रूप में विद्यमान हैं । आप कवियों (मन्त्रद्रष्टा ऋषियों) के आश्रयभूत हैं, समस्त लोकों की रक्षा करने वाले हैं । आप ही हिरण्यरेता (अग्नि) रूप और यज्ञ रूप भी हैं । आप ही एक मात्र विराट् एवं पूर्ण पुरुष हैं ॥ [सृष्टि के संकल्प का बीज जब ब्रह्म के तेजस् में पकता है, तब उसे हिरण्यगर्भ कहते हैं तथा जब परब्रह्म संकल्प-बीज का आधान करता है, तो उसे हिरण्यरेता कहते हैं।] ॥2॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Thou art immanent in all; from (the view-point) of the wise, Thou, the Lord of the world art the all-knowing (Fire). In the beginning Thou art unborn, the first born, the sacrifice, too, art Thou. Thou alone the one omnipresent and ancient. ॥2॥

[ Sutra 3 ]

प्राणः प्रसूतिर्भुवनस्य योनिर्व्याप्तं त्वया एकपदेन विश्वम् । त्वं विश्वभूर्योनिपारः स्वगर्भे कुमार एको विशिखः सुधन्वा ॥3॥

prāṇaḥ prasūtirbhuvanasya yonirvyāptaṃ tvayā ekapadena viśvam । tvaṃ viśvabhūryonipāraḥ svagarbhe kumāra eko viśikhaḥ sudhanvā ॥3॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — जिस प्रकार माला के प्रत्येक दाने (मनके) में सूत्र (धागा) रहता है, उसी प्रकार आप ही प्रमुख (सूत्र) रूप से समस्त विश्व में प्राण रूप में संव्याप्त एवं उसके उत्पत्ति के कारण स्वरूप हैं । आपने ही समस्त विश्व को एक पग से माप लिया है, अतः आप ही इस विश्व संरचना के उत्पत्ति स्थल भी हैं । आप ही प्राण रुप में सर्वत्र व्याप्त (विष्णु की तरह) संसार के रक्षक रूप तथा श्रेष्ठ धनुष को धारण करने थाले कुमार (कार्तिकेय) स्वरूप हैं ॥3॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Thou art the Principle of life; Thou the manifestation (the manifested world); Thou the source of the world; by a quarter hast Thou pervaded this world. Thou art the world's birth, the cause, the life supreme, and the child in the womb armed with the excellent bow and arrow. ॥3॥

[ Sutra 4 ]

वितत्य बाणं तरुणार्कवर्णं व्योमान्तरे भासि हिरण्यगर्भः । भासा त्वया व्योग्नि कृतः सुतार्क्ष्यस्त्वं वै कुमारस्त्वमरिष्टनेमिः ॥4॥

vitatya bāṇaṃ taruṇārkavarṇaṃ vyomāntare bhāsi hiraṇyagarbhaḥ । bhāsā tvayā vyogni kṛtaḥ sutārkṣyastvaṃ vai kumārastvamariṣṭanemiḥ ॥4॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — हे परमात्मन्! आप ही मध्याह्नकालीन सूर्य के तेज की भाँति बाण को अपनी ओर आकृष्ट करके, माया द्वारा रचित इन समस्त प्राणियों के हृदयरूप आकाश में प्रकाशमान हिरण्यगर्भ रूप हैं । आपके ही दिव्य प्रकाश से भगवान् भास्कर आकाश में प्रकाशित होते हैं । आप ही देवताओं के सेनापति ‘कार्तिकेय’ के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित हैं और गरुड़ की तरह सभी अरिष्टों (विघ्नों) का भली-भाँति नियमन करने वाले हैं ॥4॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Having widely spread out the arrow, shining like the youthful sun in the sky, Thou shinest as Hiranyagarbha. By means of light hast Thou created the resplendent eagle (the sun), in the sky. Thou art Subrahmanya, Thou Arishtanemi (a brother of Garuda). ॥4॥

[ Sutra 5 ]

त्वं वज्रभृद्भूतपतिस्त्वमेव कामः प्रजानां निहितोऽसि सोमे । स्वाहा स्वधा यच्च वषट् करोति रुद्रः पशूनां गुहया निमग्नः ॥5॥

tvaṃ vajrabhṛdbhūtapatistvameva kāmaḥ prajānāṃ nihito'si some । svāhā svadhā yacca vaṣaṭ karoti rudraḥ paśūnāṃ guhayā nimagnaḥ ॥5॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — (हे परमात्मन्!) आप ही वज्र को धारण करने वाले इन्द्र के रूप में तथा (भवरोग नाशक) रुद्र रूप में समस्त प्रजाओं के स्वामी हैं । आप ही अभीष्ट फलदायी पितरों के रूप में चन्द्रलोक में स्थित हैं तथा देवों एवं पितरों की तृप्ति हेतु सम्पन्न होने वाले यज्ञ और श्राद्ध अर्थात् स्वाहा, स्वधा एवं वषट्कार रूप हैं । आप ही समस्त प्राणियों के हृदय में स्थित हैं ॥5॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Thou art the bearer of the Thunderbolt (Indra), the Lord of beings; Thou alone art love in all living beings and in Soma (Shiva with Uma). Thou art the sacred syllables Svaha, Svadha and Vasat; Thou the Rudra immanent unhurt in the hearts of beasts ॥5॥

[ Sutra 6 ]

धाता विधाता पवनः सुपर्णो विष्णुर्वराहो रजनी रहश्च । भूतं भविष्यत्प्रभवः क्रियाश्च कालः क्रमस्त्वं परमाक्षरं च ॥6॥

dhātā vidhātā pavanaḥ suparṇo viṣṇurvarāho rajanī rahaśca । bhūtaṃ bhaviṣyatprabhavaḥ kriyāśca kālaḥ kramastvaṃ paramākṣaraṃ ca ॥6॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — (हे भगवन्!) आप ही (प्राण रूप में) धाता (धारण करने वाले) तथा (सृष्टि- संरचना के रूप में) विधाता, पवन, गरुड़, विष्णु, वाराह, रात एवं दिन हैं । आप ही भूत, भविष्यत् एवं वर्तमान भी हैं । सभी क्रियाएँ, कालगति और परमाक्षर (अर्थात् परम अविनाशी तत्त्व ॐकार ) रूप में आप ही विद्यमान हैं ॥6॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — (Thou art) the supporter, the ordainer, the purifier (air), the all pervading plenum, the divine Varaha, night and aloneness; the past, the future and the present; Thou art all activities, time, sequence and the supreme Imperishable. ॥6॥

[ Sutra 7 ]

ऋचो यजूंषि प्रसवन्ति वक्त्रात्सामानि सम्राड्वसुरन्तरिक्षम् । त्वं यज्ञनेता हुतभुग्विभुश्च रुद्रास्तथा दैत्यगणा वसुश्च ॥7॥

ṛco yajūṃṣi prasavanti vaktrātsāmāni samrāḍvasurantarikṣam । tvaṃ yajñanetā hutabhugvibhuśca rudrāstathā daityagaṇā vasuśca ॥7॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — जिसके मुख से ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद और सामवेद आदि उत्पन्न (प्रकट) होते हैं, वे आप ही हैं । आप ही सम्राट् (राजा अथवा सर्वत्र प्रकाशित) वसु, अन्तरिक्ष, यज्ञीय प्रक्रिया सम्पन्न करने वाले, यज्ञीय भाग ग्रहण करने वाले एवं सर्वशक्तिमान् हैं । आप ही एकादश रुद्र, (दिति को सन्तान) दैत्यरूप एवं सर्वत्र व्याप्त होने वाले (वसुरूप) हैं ॥7॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — The Vedic verses, prose formulas and songs proceed from Thy mouth. Thou shinest best (as) the Vasus and the sky. Thou art the leader of the sacrifice, the all-pervading fire and the Rudras. So also (art Thou) the hosts of demons and Vasus. ॥7॥

[ Sutra 8 ]

स एष देवोऽम्बरगश्च चक्रे अन्येऽभ्यधिष्ठेत तमो निरुन्ध्यः । हिरण्मयं यस्य विभाति सर्वं व्योमान्तरे रश्मिमिमंसुनाभिः ॥8॥

sa eṣa devo'mbaragaśca cakre anye'bhyadhiṣṭheta tamo nirundhyaḥ । hiraṇmayaṃ yasya vibhāti sarvaṃ vyomāntare raśmimimaṃsunābhiḥ ॥8॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — (हे परमात्मन्!) विभिन्न रूपों वाले आप ही सूर्य मण्डल में विद्यमान तथा अन्यत्र ( अन्य स्थान एवं जीव के हृदय में स्थित) अज्ञानान्धकार को विनष्ट करते हुए प्रतिष्ठित हैं । जिस विराट् स्वरूप के हृदयरूपी आकाश में ‘ब्रह्माण्ड गर्भिणी’ (ब्रह्माण्ड को अपने गर्भ में धारण करने वाली) ‘सुनाभि’ ( श्रेष्ठ नाभि-केन्द्र या माया) स्थित है, वह भी आप ही हैं । सूर्यादि (ग्रह-नक्षत्रों) में जो प्रकाशमान रश्मियाँ हैं, वे आपकी ही प्रकाश किरणें हैं ॥8॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — This God here dwells in the sun (the wheel of the celestial chariot) and elsewhere dispelling darkness. All that pertains to Him shines in lovely (fashion) like gold in some other sky. (This world of relativity shines so). ॥8॥

[ Sutra 9 ]

स सर्ववेत्ता भुवनस्य गोप्ता नाभिः प्रजानां निहिता जनानाम् । प्रोता त्वमोता विचितिः क्रमाणां प्रजापतिश्छन्दमयो विगर्भः ॥9॥

sa sarvavettā bhuvanasya goptā nābhiḥ prajānāṃ nihitā janānām । protā tvamotā vicitiḥ kramāṇāṃ prajāpatiśchandamayo vigarbhaḥ ॥9॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — वही (विराट्-ब्रह्म) सब कुछ जानने वाला, समस्त भुवनों का रक्षक एवं समस्त प्राणि-समुदाय का आधार स्वरूप नाभि (केन्द्र) है । अन्तर्यामी रूप में आप ही सर्वत्र ओत-प्रोत हैं । आप ही विविध प्रकार की गतियों के विश्रान्ति रूप हैं । आप की विष्णु के गर्भ (कमलनाल) में प्रजापति के रूप में स्थित हैं एवं वेद (छन्द) भी आप ही हैं ॥9॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — He is the all-knower; the Protector of the world; the firm nave of all born beings. He exists lengthwise and crosswise, the sum total of (things) spread out in order. He is the birthless (of wondrous births) Prajapati sung in the Vedas. ॥9॥

[ Sutra 10 ]

सामैश्चिदन्तो विरजश्च बाहुं हिरण्मयं वेदविदां वरिष्ठम् । यमध्वरे ब्रह्मविदः स्तुवन्ति सामैर्यजुर्भिः क्रतुभिस्त्वमेव ॥10॥

sāmaiścidanto virajaśca bāhuṃ hiraṇmayaṃ vedavidāṃ variṣṭham । yamadhvare brahmavidaḥ stuvanti sāmairyajurbhiḥ kratubhistvameva ॥10॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — वेदवेत्ताओं में श्रेष्ठ ज्ञानीजन रजोगुण से परे, स्वर्ण कान्ति वाले (विराट् पुरुष) के अन्त को साम आदि वेदों से भी नहीं जान पाते । ब्रह्मवेत्ताजन यज्ञों में यजुर्वेद के मन्त्रों से तथा सामवेदी जन साम मन्त्रों से जिसकी स्तुति करते हैं, वे आप ही हैं ॥10॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Thou art He whom in the sacrifices the knowers of Brahman adore with Vedic Songs, formulas and rites and the soma juice; as the final (Truth) devoid of all admixture, as the golden, the best of Veda-knowers. ॥10॥

[ Sutra 11 ]

त्वं स्त्री पुमांस्त्वं च कुमार एकस्त्वं वै कुमारी ह्यथ भूस्त्वमेव । त्वमेव धाता वरुणश्च राजा त्वं वत्सरोऽग्न्यर्यम एव सर्वम् ॥11॥

tvaṃ strī pumāṃstvaṃ ca kumāra ekastvaṃ vai kumārī hyatha bhūstvameva । tvameva dhātā varuṇaśca rājā tvaṃ vatsaro'gnyaryama eva sarvam ॥11॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — (हे परमात्मन्!) आप अकेले ही स्त्री, पुरुष, कुमार एवं कुमारी हैं । आप ही पृथिवी हैं । आप ही धाता, वरुण, सम्राट्, संवत्सर, अग्नि और अर्यमा (सूर्य) हैं । आप ही सब कुछ हैं ॥11॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Thou alone art the woman, the man; again Thou art the boy and the girl. Thou art the ordainer, the King Varuna, the Year, Aryama, the all. ॥11॥

[ Sutra 12 ]

मित्रः सुपर्णश्चन्द्र इन्द्रो वरुणो रुद्रस्त्वष्टा विष्णुः सविता गोपतिस्त्वम् । त्वं विष्णुर्भूतानि तु त्रासि दैत्यांस्त्वयावृतं जगदुद्भवगर्भः ॥12॥

mitraḥ suparṇaścandra indro varuṇo rudrastvaṣṭā viṣṇuḥ savitā gopatistvam । tvaṃ viṣṇurbhūtāni tu trāsi daityāṃstvayāvṛtaṃ jagadudbhavagarbhaḥ ॥12॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — (हे परम पुरुष!) सूर्य, गरुड़, चन्द्र, वरुण, रुद्र, प्रजापति, विष्णु, सविता, गोपति (इन्द्रियों या गौओं के स्वामी) जो कि वागादि इन्द्रियों के स्वामी कहे जाते हैं, वे आप ही हैं । आप ही विष्णु बन कर समस्त मानव जाति को दैत्यों के भय से त्राण दिलाने वाले हैं । आप ही जगत् के जनक भूगर्भरूप हैं। आपके द्वारा सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड आवृत है ॥12॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — (Thou art) Mitra, the bright-feathered (Garuda), the moon, Indra, Varuna, Rudra, Tvastar, Vishnu, Savitar, the lord of light, Thou Vishnu protectest all beings from the demoniac; the world is encompassed by Thee; Thou the womb of all that is born; Thou art the earth, the atmosphere, the firmament; Thou art the self-born; Thou art turned towards all. ॥12॥

[ Sutra 13 ]

त्वं भूर्भुवः स्वस्त्वं हि स्वयंभूरथ विश्वतोमुखः । य एवं नित्यं वेदयते गुहाशयं प्रभु पुराणं सर्वभूतं हिरण्मयम् । हिरण्मयं बुद्धिमतां परां गतिं स बुद्धिमान्बुद्धिमतीत्य तिष्ठतीत्युपनिषत् ॥13॥

tvaṃ bhūrbhuvaḥ svastvaṃ hi svayaṃbhūratha viśvatomukhaḥ । ya evaṃ nityaṃ vedayate guhāśayaṃ prabhu purāṇaṃ sarvabhūtaṃ hiraṇmayam । hiraṇmayaṃ buddhimatāṃ parāṃ gatiṃ sa buddhimānbuddhimatītya tiṣṭhatītyupaniṣat ॥13॥

— Translation from Aurovindo (Hindi) — आप ही स्वयम्भू (स्वयं प्रकट होने वाले) एवं विश्वतोमुख (सर्वत्र मुख वाले) हैं । आप ही भूः, भुवः, स्वः आदि (लोकों) में प्रतिष्ठित हैं । जो भी मनुष्य अपने गुहारूप हृदय क्षेत्र में स्थित पुराण पुरुषोत्तम आदिपुरुष को ‘प्राणस्वरूप’ एवं प्रकाश स्वरूप’ जानता है । वह (पुरुष) ब्रह्मज्ञानियों की परमगति को , अज्ञानग्रस्त भ्रम बुद्धि का अतिक्रमण करके प्राप्त कर लेता है । यही उपनिषद् (रहस्यात्मक ज्ञान) है ॥13॥

— Translation from Swami Madhavananda — Whoso thus knows the eternal Dweller in the cave (of the heart), the ancient Lord who has become the all, the golden, the supreme goal of the wise, is wise. He stays transcending all (forms of) wisdom. This is the secret doctrine. ॥13॥
