Content: Darshan...

Content: That most exquisitely beautiful and inexplicable of all moments, when we come face-to-face with the Divine.

Content: Darshan is traditionally used to describe the moment when we behold a deity, a saint or an enlightened being.

Content: The experience of darshan Is highly revered in Vedic tradition, as just seeing a divine or enlightened being is believed to cleanse the karmas of lifetimes, and create deep and lasting transformation in us.

Content: But darshan is something far beyond mere physical 'seeing'. The word 'darshan' is usually translated as 'divine vision' or 'holy sight', but like many mystical Sanskrit words, darshan cannot be translated. Rather, it has to be experienced.

Page 3

Content: How to describe darshan ?

Content: In a temple, just before the day's worship begins,

Content: when the doors of the inner shrine swing open

Content: and we glimpse the radiant bejewelled form of the deity

Content: gleaming in the lamplit darkness,

Content: a certain moment happens

Content: that is beyond words, beyond thoughts, beyond the mind.

Content: That moment is darshan.

Content: Darshan is not an event in space and time.

Content: Rather, darshan happens at the moment when we are lifted out of space and time.

Content: Darshan is like a window to the infinite expanse of Consciousness,

Content: allowing us to glimpse the formless in a way that we can understand.

Content: Science of darshan

Content: Darshan

Content: is the powerful superconscious vibration

Content: that is present around an enlightened being

Content: at all times.

Content: Although we usually speak

Content: of 'getting' the darshan of an evolved soul,

Content: an enlightened being does not actually 'give' darshan -

Content: he simply radiates darshan.

Content: Just as the sun continuously radiates light,

Content: whether anybody is present to receive it or not,

Content: the enlightened consciousness

Content: is forever radiating its presence.

Content: The auspicious moment

Content: when we are able to 'catch' it

Content: becomes the moment of darshan for us!

Content: The miracle of Darshan

Content: There is a beautiful true story that illustrates the real meaning of darshan.

Content: The 16th century saint-poet from Kerala, Narayana Bhattatiri, sings about the incomparable moment of his darshan of Lord Krishna in his Sanskrit epic poem 'Naraneeyam'.

Content: Bhattatiri arrived at the ancient Guruvayoor temple in Kerala in 1587,

Content: On the 100th day, when the shrine opens, he describes in ecstasy his darshan of the Lord:

Content: Agre pashyaami tejo nibhidatara kalayaaavali lobhaneeyam Peeyoosha-plaavitoham tadanutadutare divya kaishora-vesham...

Content: I see Him right before me! A divine youthful form surrounded by the enticing luster of the blue kalaya flowers... Immersed in nectar am I..!

Content: The directness of this experience shows that this is the moment of darshan for the poet.

Content: Even though he had been physically seeing the deity in the shrine for a hundred days, darshan happened to him only on the last day.

Content: And at that very moment,

Page 5

Content: Darshan has the power to release both physical and psychic blocks in our system and cut through the layers of unconscious negative patterns built up over lifetimes. Our physiology can actually change in the presence of an enlightened Consciousness. For the receiver who is ready, darshan can be the moment of permanent and irreversible transformation.

Content: How to receive darshan?

Content: The important thing in darshan is not 'what to do', but 'how to be'. Darshan cannot be given, but it may be 'drawn' from the source by the receiver, by tuning in to this superconscious vibration. The breathing space of an enlightened being is like an extension of his physical body. It is a live healing energy-field. When we are completely available and receptive in such an energy-field, we don't need a technique to catch a glimpse of the same state. Even without much effort from our side, our bio-memory 'learns' the expression of enlightenment.

Content: I always say,

Content: 'Darshan is the enlightenment technique for lazy people!'

Content: The enlightened master Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa says beautifully,

Content: 'If you want to scare away some birds sitting on a tree,

Content: you don't have to do it one by one.

Content: Just clap loudly once, and all the birds on the tree will fly away.'

Content: In the same way, in the master's presence,

Content: you don't have to work on your samskaras one by one.

Content: You don't have to work so hard!

Content: The master's powerful grace is the one 'clap'

Content: that can destroy all your samskaras once and for all!

Page 8

Content: Why Darshan?

Content: See, you don't need to be

Content: in the presence of an enlightened being

Content: to have a glimpse of enlightenment.

Content: As I told you,

Content: we all continuously have brief spontaneous glimpses

Content: of the superconscious state.

Content: Such glimpses are always happening in our lives.

Content: But the problem is we are neither aware of it when it happens,

Content: nor are we able to hold on to it.

Content: All your yoga, pranayama, meditation techniques -

Content: all these are only to create the state of readiness in you -

Content: the readiness to experience,

Content: and the readiness to hold the experience.

Content: Darshan can change

Content: your physiology

Content: Understand, even your physiology changes

Content: in the presence of an enlightened Consciousness!

Content: If you are completely open during darshan,

Content: the software of enlightened physiology can also be downloaded into you,

Content: Your body learns that it can be better than what it is now!

Content: Your bio-memory learns the lesson

Content: that the possibility for better existence is there.

Content: When you have the grace of the master,

Content: both the hardware and software can be totally changed.

Content: The conscious mind can be cleared by the right teachings, by removing the

Content: wrong ideas and taking in clear and correct ideas.

Content: The unconscious mind is like the software, which can be cleared by

Content: meditation techniques.

Content: But ultimately, for the software change to be permanent,

Content: the hardware also has to change.

Content: Your very brain grooves have to change to hold and radiate

Content: the experience of living enlightenment.

Content: The hardware, the brain itself, will be tuned to hold this new software

Content: by the darshan or grace of the master.

Content: Bhaava Darshan

Content: The word 'bhaava' too has no translation in English.

Content: The closest one can come to a translation of 'bhaava' is 'experiencing the formless in form'.

Content: In Vedic religions, the 'devatas' or demigods are divine energies present in the cosmos.

Content: Innumerable enlightened beings are also available on the subtle plane to bless and guide humanity.

Content: Bhaava darshan signifies the manifesting of these auspicious divine energies through the body of an enlightened being.

Content: An avatar Is the embodiment of the Cosmos.

Content: All Cosmic energies flow into him as rivers flow into the ocean.

Content: In his embodied form, the Avatar is the reservoir of 'ananta kalyana guna', unlimited auspicious qualities.

Content: By his Cosmic will, an avatar can manifest any of these auspicious energies through his body.

Page 12

Content: Each of the divine energies can awaken certain latent desirable qualities in us (kalyana guna). When they express through the body of an avatar, they become empowered to lift us effortlessly to higher states of consciousness.

Content: Paramahamsa Nithyananda graces devotees with bhaava darshana of the divine energies of Shiva, Krishna, Kalabhairava Devi, Murugan, Buddha, and the great saint Shankara

Content: Darshan and Deeksha

Content: Symbolically speaking, darshan is the moment when you 'see' the Divine,

Content: and deeksha is the moment when the Divine 'sees' you!

Content: For the perfectly prepared and completely open being,

Content: darshan itself can be the moment of Initiation.

Content: But in general, darshan is a preparation for deeksha.

Content: Darshan is like ploughing the soil, deeksha is like planting the seed.

Content: Darshan makes you liquid and receptive.

Content: It helps you connect deeply to the vibration of the master

Content: and prepare yourself to receive his energy.

Content: The longer you spend in darshan, the more finely tuned you become,

Content: so that at the moment of deeksha,

Content: you will be completely open and ready to receive.

Page 15

Content: Joy of Darshan

Content: Bhaava darshan

Content: is one of the most deeply fulfilling experiences

Content: you can have in the master's presence.

Content: To simply behold him in these ecstatic divine moods

Content: is an experience in itself.

Content: And beyond that, to receive the darshan of a divine being is not an ordinary thing!

Content: On our own, it would take us many lifetimes of extraordinary spiritual disciplines,

Content: a perfectly tuned body and mind, and unswerving devotion,

Content: to qualify for a moment of darshan of any divine being.

Content: But by simply sitting in the boundless compassionate presence of an Avatar,

Content: we receive the darshan of all divine beings in one body!

Content: Bhaava darshan is an unimaginable blessing for the seeker,

Content: raising you to the higher divine planes and fulfilling the desires of lifetimes,

Content: whether you are conscious of it or not.
