Content: Nitti Mudaliar entered a restaurant and began ordering vast quantities of food. Platefuls of steaming idlis, dosas and jalebis made their way to his table. He ate with relish. After a hearty meal, Nitti finally signaled the waiter to stop bringing in the food. The waiter duly returned with a little white slip.

Content: Two men, one a gnani (enlightened person) and the other a haughty landowner, were traveling through a forest. Night had fallen and everything was steeped in deep darkness.

Content: The landowner began to tremble in fear of the impending storm.

Content: His mind was immediately given over to confusion. Should he walk on? Or should he find a safe place to stop till the storm was spent?

Content: Nitti Mudaliar once purchased a new car and went off on his first ride. On and on he went, mile after mile through the city.

Content: People watched in admiration, but the truth is, Nitti was in a frenzy of fear. Why? Because soon after he launched out, he had realized that he knew everything about how to run the car - except how to stop it!

Content: Luckily for everybody, the car finally came to a stop after colliding with a tree.

Content: A stunned passerby enquired of Nitti, "What's wrong with you? Don't you know how to drive?"

At least, in a physical accident, you stand to lose only one one life – but when we become slaves to our inner chatter, we could spend life after life being taken for a ride. So use your mind to move around in the world, certainly - but make sure just who’s in control! /

Content: This is a modern fable!

Content: After World War I, a biplane was found abandoned near a remote tribal settlement in Asia.

Content: Never having seen an aircraft up close earlier, the tribal folk assumed that it must be some strange sort of bullock cart- which was all they had seen on wheels. News spread in the village about the new bullock cart. The biplane was proudly taken around the settlement yoked to bullocks, and people came to see and admire it.

Content: Some weeks later, one intelligent young tribal lad who had returned from a trip to civilization, inferred that all those buttons and switches on the display panel must have some purpose. So he fiddled around with them till he got the biplane to taxi around a bit. This amazed the tribals - the bullock cart could move around on its own! The young lad, who had seen tractors at work in

Content: the faraway villages, declared that this was no bullock cart, but a tractor! The bewildered tribal folk agreed, and the biplane began to be used as such. (Quite an inconvenient tractor, it must have been!)

Content: But it took a war veteran, stumbling upon the settlement many months later, to rev up the engine, operate the gears and fly the biplane right up into the sky, fulfilling the purpose for which it was made.

Content: / This is the story of your life! Most of us treat our life, our potential, like a bullock cart. Some use it like a tractor. But how many of us can transform it into an aircraft? The power to fly is there within you, but can lie latent forever unless you learn how to operate the gears. Content: 5 / THE BLIND MAN AND THE SAGE /

Content: One morning a blind man, who lived in a tiny village in the Himalayan foothills, was making his way from his home village to the neighbouring one. He knew his way well, but the previous night it had snowed heavily and the paths were wet and slippery.

Content: Suddenly, the man stumbled against something. Picking it up and feeling it with his fingers, he noticed that it was a nice long stick, perfect to use as a staff. Pleased at his discovery, the man continued on his way, holding out the staff before him to help him along.

Content: Soon he passed a tree under which sat a sage. The sage called out to the blind man in alarm, "Be careful! What you are holding in your hand is a frozen snake!"

Content: The blind man was surprised. "A snake? Oh, no - this is a perfectly good staff I'm holding. It's been of great help to me all this time!"

Content: "No, no, it's a snake! Let go of it, I warn you!", cried the sage,

Content: "you cannot see how poisonous it is. Sooner or later it will kill you."

Page Number: 13

Content: Now the blind man became suspicious.

Page Number: 13

Content: "Why are you so concerned about me anyway?", he asked angrily. "There must be some reason.... Aha, I get it! You want to take this staff away from me, you wicked man! You'd better find yourself another staff, because I'm not going to part with this one."

Content: "I have no use for your staff, for I have eyes to see", said the sage wearily. "I'm only trying to help you see that it is a snake you hold."

Content: But the blind man refused to heed the sage. Leaning on the staff, he went on his way, proud that he hadn't let the sage make a fool of him.

Content: As it neared noon, the sun grew warmer and the snow began

Content: to melt. The staff in the blind man's hand stirred to life. The man was puzzled. Was the sage right? Should he throw the staff away? But still he hesitated. Such a nice staff...! As he as wondering what to do, the 'staff' uncoiled, sank its fangs into his hand and killed him on the spot. / When you approach a master, examine yourself carefully. What is the staff you're carrying? Money? Power? Intelligence? Ideologies? He has no need for any of them. And he will most likely warn you that these are snakes, poisonous snakes. Whether you continue to hold on, to decide to let go, can decide your destiny! /

Content: 6 / THE FAST-ASLEEP SHEEP-LION /

Content: Once upon a time in a jungle, a lioness died soon after giving birth to a cub. The day-old cub, weak and hungry, was found by a flock of sheep grazing on the mountainside nearby. Taking pity on the cub, they took it into their fold. In the constant company of the sheep, the lion cub learnt to feed on grass, bleat like a sheep and even acquired a proper terror of lions.

Content: One day, a lion sprang an attack on the flock. To its astonishment, it saw among the sheep a real lion, bleating and fleeing like the rest! The lion went straight for the squealing cub and dragged him off.

Content: 'Please have mercy on this poor sheep!', cried the cub.

Page Number: 15

Content: The lion realised that the cub had no idea who he really was - and there was only one way to win his trust.

Page Number: 15

Content: "Don't worry, I won't eat you. Actually, I'm just a sheep myself. I just look a bit different, that's all", said the lion sweetly.

Content: The cub was still suspicious, so to prove his point the lion set him free. But the next day he returned and dragged off the cub again. This time the cub wasn’t so afraid, and stayed with the lion a little longer. Day after day this drama went on, and slowly the lion cub began to slip out of its own accord to join his interesting new friend whom he had begun to secretly admire.

Content: On day the lion asked casually, “Why don’t we go deeper into the forest and get a drink of water from the river?”

Content: “Oh, no! I’m afraid of all the wild animals!” cried the cub.

Page Number: 16

Content: You idiot! The moment they see you they’ll flee from you instead! thought the lion, but aloud he said, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you.”

Content: So they went to the river. Just as the cub stooped to drink,

Content: the lion pushed his face over the water, forcing him to see, for the first time, his own reflection.

Page Number: 17

Content: "You fool, don't you see who you are! You and I are no different! We are Lions, the Kings of the Jungle!" roared the lion.

Page Number: 17

Content: In a flash, the cub understood his true nature. After this revelation, no hesitation remained, no confusion, no more fear. He turned and walked proudly with the Lion into his Kingdom.

Content: / The Master reflects your own inner being. And whether you like it or not, he will show you your true face; he will bring you face to face with the awesome Divine hidden inside you. To do this,

Content: he may work in mysterious ways: he may push you, hurt you, cajole you, even deceive you till you are ready for the truth. Are you prepared? /

Content: 7 / THE LOST COIN /

Page Number: 18

Content: One evening Nitti Mudaliar was found searching earnestly for something in the courtyard before his house. When his wife asked him about it he replied that he had dropped a coin. His wife joined in the search. Soon others gathered and practically the whole neighbourhood was searching for the lost coin, to no avail.

Content: Suddenly one young man asked Nitti, “Which is the precise point where you dropped the coin? Even half an hour’s search has yielded no results!!”

Content: “Oh,” said Nitti, “I lost the coin inside the house”.

Page Number: 18

Content: “Then why are we searching here?”, cried an amazed neighbour.

Page Number: 18

Content: “The problem is”, said Nitti, “I have no lights inside my house. Out here at least there’s the streetlamp. We can search by its light.”

Content: / Before you laugh at Nitti, remember we are all experts at searching for answers in the wrong places! We seek to find ourselves everywhere - in money, power, relationships, ideologies - but fail to move in the one obvious direction - inwards. The first step towards awareness is realizing that the coin you have lost is inside your own house. Then you'll automatically stop searching for it in the streets! /

Content: 8 / HOW TO CROSS THE RIVER? /

Content: There is a Zen story:

Content: A master and his disciple were on their way from one village to the next. At the border of the villages flowed a shallow stream, which they usually crossed by wading through it. This time, they discovered that due to heavy rains, the stream had swollen into a small river, too deep to wade across.

Content: The disciple was alarmed, and enquired of the master, "Should we attempt to cross this river, Master?"

Page Number: 20

Content: Replied the master with a twinkle in his eye, "Certainly you should cross the river, my child. Just remember not to get your feet wet!"

Content: / This is the true meaning of sannyas. When you can cross the river of sansar, but the sansar can no longer wet you, you have found sannyas. /

Content: 9 / DON'T BE A DONKEY! /

Page Number: 21

Content: In one of South India's famous temple towns lived a donkey.

Page Number: 21

Content: It led a lazy and comfortable life, just outside the temple of the

Content: popular local deity. Pilgrims to the temple usually fed it tidbits,

Page Number: 21

Content: and it was privileged to eat the remains of the free meals served

Page Number: 21

Content: at the temple everyday.

Page Number: 21

Content: The biggest celebration held in the town every year was on

Page Number: 21

Content: the deity's birthday. On that day, the deity's idol was customarily

Page Number: 21

Content: brought out of the temple in a big procession that traveled around

Page Number: 21

Content: the town, so that people could pay their respects. One year,

Page Number: 21

Content: the townspeople chose our donkey to carry the deity's idol.

Page Number: 21

Content: Accordingly, the donkey was bathed and dressed in silk and

Page Number: 21

Content: finery, and made ready for the event. As the procession traveled

Page Number: 21

Content: down the streets, the donkey was amazed to find that people

Page Number: 21

Content: were bowing low before it, performing aarati and pooja and

Page Number: 21

Content: offering it the choicest sweetmeats.

Page Number: 22

Content: The donkey had no idea what the fuss was all about. By and by, its became certain that overnight it had become a great soul, a hero. Maybe I have become enlightened!, it thought. It started to walk with a swagger and looked contemptuously upon the other animals on the streets. As the day wore on, the donkey began to tire of carrying the idol upon its back. Why should I struggle under this heavy burden? After all, I’m a great soul now! I don’t need to show anyone any respect!, it thought.

Content: So, to the horror of the people, the donkey leapt up and shook the idol of its back. What happened next, I’m sure you don’t need my help to imagine!

Content: / Every moment, be aware that you are an instrument of the Divine. Don’t let your ego get in the way! Surrender the ego, and Existence will take care of you. Put out your sooty little lamp and open the door; let the glorious moonlight of the Divine flood your room! /

Content: 10 / THE WORRY EXCHANGE OFFER /

Page Number: 23

Content: In a certain kingdom, it came to the king’s notice that everybody was unhappy, because they found themselves burdened with more than their fair share of worries, while no one else seemed to have any major worries at all.

Content: So the king announced a mega ‘Worry Exchange Offer’, where people could trade their big worries for others’ minor ones. A vast space was made ready, in the center of which stood a giant Worry Pot. Here each person could happily dump his own worries and pick up the worries of anyone else they chose.

Content: The entire kingdom gathered for the event. People brought in their worst worries, happy to trade them for another’s - for surely, others’ worries would be far easier to endure! Strangers met and starting talking to each other, discussing the worries they had brought in to exchange.

Content: In due course, the event was declared open. An announcement was made asking all those interested in exchanging their worries to come forward and drop their worries in the pot. The only condition was that they choose an equal number of worries from the other worries which were on offer. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly), not a single person came forward to make the exchange, and eventually the event had to be declared closed due to lack of public participation!

Content: / How long will you focus on your own problems? Turn your focus outward. When you begin to perceive yourself as an element in the awesome flow of Existence that envelops all, the pride and pain of personal gain and loss disappear naturally. By opening yourself to the pain of others, you blossom into a deeper realization of your own self. /

Content: 11 / TO BECOME A BUDDHA /

Content: Zen masters are famous for their unconventional methods of educating their disciples.

Content: On Zen master had a disciple who was intelligent, diligent and sincere. His only problem was that he had no patience with long and arduous techniques for attaining enlightenment.

Content: Every day he would apprach the master and ask him, "Just tell me master, when will I become like Buddha?" The master would simply smile and offer no answer.

Page Number: 25

Content: Working day and night, practising every technique according to the master's instructions, and still finding no answer, the disciple became crazed with the thirst for enlightenment.

Page Number: 25

Content: Finally, one day he decided that the quest was simply not worth it. He went to the master and demanded, "Tell me one thing before I leave. Am I ever going to become like Buddha or not?"

Page Number: 26

Content: In answer, the master slapped the disciple furiously across the face. In that instant, the disciple awakened to his true nature. / What did the master mean by that slap? Was he admonishing the disciple for hoping for too much? NO. The master simply had to jolt the disciple into the awareness that he was already a Buddha! How can you want to become something you already are? We all go through life as sleeping buddhas, completely unaware of the divinity of our own nature. As with the lion and the sheep, it takes a master to show us our true face! /
