GENERAL PREFACE

That nation is blest which has a contribution to make to the culture of the world. Each nation in the history of mankind has endeavoured accord- ing to its surroundings and circumstances to con- tribute its own particular share to the general progress of the human race. The part that India played in this cultural development has been vast, varied and wealthy.

No culture is transmitted down the generations in its pristine purity. The play of world forces soon brings about a new amalgamation and a new synthesis, laying the foundation for further advance. And yet in this process of synthesis, each element that gets into the synthetic whole tends to keep its own individuality. In this sense, Indian culture is a complex but harmonious whole. India has been a battle-ground not only of contending races for earthly power, but also of vigorous cultures. It is this eternal struggle for advance that has invested the Indian nation with perennial life.

In the building up of this complex culture of the Indian nation, the Andhras have had not a little share. It is the aim of this series of publi- cations to present to the world the distinctive con- tribution of the Andhras towards the variegated yet homo-geneous mosaic of Indian culture. Em- phasis is laid in this series purposely on culture, for it alone is of the sprit and ever-living, while all the rest is of the flesh and soon withers and dies away.

PREFACE

On the fifth day of the dark half of the month of Pushya is celebrated every year throughout the length and breadth of southern India, and beyond in Northern India too, a festival of music in memory of the saintly Tyagaraja, for it is the day on which ninety years ago in the cyclic year Parabhava, (Śaka 1768 or 1847 A. D.) that this great soul left off his mortal coil and mixed himself in the world of the Ever-living. On that day, thousands of expert musicians gather in different towns and villages and hundreds of thou- sands of lovers of the divine art of music throng and pay their homage to this greatest modern exponent of Andhra culture.

Language is the audible outward manifestation of the inner spirit and while individual languages differ from one another and create barriers between race and race on account of their mutual unintelli- gibility, there is an expression of the human voice which is universal in its appeal, and that is music. For, while its content may not be always under- stood, its form, with its undulations,-now plaintive and sad, now buoyyant and joyful,-has the power to create an answering echo in the human breast, overstepping all bounds of race or religion,

caste or creed, language or nationality. The eternal springs of human motive or action are the same throughout the world and their best outward reflection is found in melodies that roll and distri- bute themselves through space to evoke sympathetic response not only in human hearts but also, as the connoisseurs of that art have claimed, throughout creation, animate and inanimate. The Samskrit saying goes: "śiśur vētti, paśur vētti, vētti gāna- rasam phanih," 'the baby knows, the beast knows, and the serpent realises the essence of music.' The Telugu poe Peddana, the court poet of the Vijaya- nagara emperor Krishnadevaraya, made in his Manucharitra his heroine to claim for her music the power to melt even stones :

"rahi vutta jantra-gatramula ral garagintsu vimala-gāndharvambu vidya māku. "

'Our subject of study is that pure art of instrumen- tal and vocal music which makes stones to melt in joy.'

While this language of music is universal, it also receives its particular modifications according to the medium through which it surges forth. This distinctness in form is the result of its content. The content varies with the individual culture and the language which is the embodiment of that culture. Tyagaraja's musical compositions stand apart from the rest of their kind because they have been sung in the Andhra language. While it must be recognised that each language has its

own particular musical appeal to its speakers, there ale languages which pass beyond their limits of usage in their appeal to those who are not conver- sant with them. Telugu is one of them, and yet not all of it. Indeed no language can lay claim to such a merit in its entirety; it is only when it is presented in its best form that it commends itself even to outsiders. Tyagaraja, along with other great masters of the Telugu Muse, rendered this service to the Telugu language in that he wielded it in such a form as to be accepted and admired even by those who do not understand its content. His songs are sung in ecstatic delight and with the most perfect melody at the present day not only by the Telugus, but also by the Tamilians and the Kannadigas, who value them in preference to their own native The Telugu aspirant for the musical talent must, however, now make his songs.

careful preservation of their holy art of music, which but for them would have become extinct and gone the way of many such emblems of culture that had shown their heads and laid them- selves down in the History of Bharatavarsha.

It was lucky that Tyāgaraja was born in the Tanjore district, for here the Telugu and ' Tamil cultures have met and helped each other to develope into a richer whole. The emotionalism of the Andhra gained by the systematising instinct of

tbe Tamilian and the pragmatic temperament of the Tamilian was leavened by a veneer of emo- tional enthusiasm. Tyagaraja belonged to a Mulikinati Telugu family which was one of the many that migrated to the south in the train of the Vijayanagara Telugu conquerors of the south. The Telugu ruling families had decayed and the Marathas came into possession of the land. Under the Telugu Nayaka rulers of Madura and Tanjore, the distinctive arts cultivated by the Telugus flourished and spread in the Tamil country. Their successors, the Marathas, kept up the patronage for fine arts which the Telugu feudatories of the old Vijayanagara empire extended to them.

We do not really know much about the life of Tyagaraja. His grandfather is said to be one Girirajakavi, his father Ramabrahmam and his mother Santa. These may or may not be real personal names. The name of the grandfather Girirajakavi is based upon one of the songs of Tyāgaraja, namely 'giri-raja-sutā tanaya'. But this song is composed in praise of the god Ganśa and is in no way concerned with a human personage. Similarly, the name Ramabrahmam may also refer to the god Rama whom Tyagaraja had taken as his own deity. So also the name Santa referred to as his mother may be only the state of mental poise, the condition precedent for sustained contemplation of the Divinity. However this may be, that is the parentage assigned by tradition to Tyagaraja. Girirajakavi is said to have lived in the time of Shaji, the second Maratha ruler of

Tanjore, (1684-1711 A.D.) He is said to have been the father of five sons of whom Ramabrahmam was the last.

Ramabrahmam seems to have had three sons by his wife Śanta,-Panchapagesa, Ramanātha and Tyagaraja. Some say he had only two, Pañchāpagēsa and Tyagaraja. Tyāgaraja sometimes refers in his songs to the difficulties he underwent at the hands of his elder brother, whose name, however, he does not mention. Pañchapagesa, otherwise called Panchanadabrahmam had a son Pattabhiramabrahmam. His son was Pañcha- nadabrabmam whose son Pattabhiramabrahmam now lives in Tiruvadi. Tyagaraja at first married Kamalamba who died when he was thirty years old, and so he took a second wife Dharmamba. She gave birth to an only daughter Sitalakshmi. This daughter gave birth to a son Tyagaya who died at the age of thirty. With him Tyagaraja's family may be said to have become extinct.

It is a pity that we do not know much about the details of the life of Tyagaraja except what we can glean from his own songs and such tradi- tional and legendary stories as grow around the lives of all great men. Such internal evidence as we have about the incidents of his life is variously linked by different people with the different songs that he composed. We are not concerned with the conflicting statements on this point, but shall be satisfied with such a cogent narrative of his life as is possible under the circumstances.

Ramabrahmam's first son seems to have taken to evil ways and was disliked by his parents. The times were hard and the rulers of the land fickle and given to a life of ease and worldly enjoyment. Tyagaraja's father found it hard to eke out his living at Tiruvalur where Tyagaraja was born and migrated to Tiruvarur, which is a famous place of pilgrimage, six miles north of Tanjore. Tiruvarur is also called Panchanada, being situated in the midst of the five rivers Kolladam, Kavēri, Kodammurutti, Vettār and Vennar. There he could not find a proper institution to send his son to, and after five years of private teaching at home sent him to a Samskrit school. Here the boy received a good grounding in the Vedas and the Vedangas, but these studies were not near the heart of the boy. He was more attracted towards the Ramayana which he seems to havestudied again and again and in time cultivated such a strong love for the hero of the epic that he decided to have him as his deity. He had already cultivated a tiste for music at the instance of his mother who taught him in his childhood many of the songs of Purandaradasa. He had a sweet voice which attracted every one and from early youth seems to have practised the art of composing original songs in praise of Rama.

On his way to and from school, Tyagaraja had to pass by the side of a school of music conducted by one Sonti Venkataramanappa Pantulu. He would sometimes slip into this school and be listening to the songs sung there.

'This attracted the teacher's attention who took him as one of his pupils at the request of his father. Legend says that Tyagaraja received initiation into the secret of the Rama-mantra by a sadhu in his early age, and Narada, the divine musician, appeared personally before him and gave him a book on musis called 'Svararnava', which enabled him to revive the Naradiya school of music. Scholars may quarrel about the nomenclature of the school to which Thyagaraja belonged, but we must recognize that he soon became so proficient in his art and so devoted to god Ramachandra that he soon evolved a distinct system of his own in which he attuned the art of music to devotion to the supreme Being in the way of the great prophet-singers like Kabir and Chaitanya who hid preceded him. But there is this difference bet ween his music and that of the other devotees of old that while in their case devotion outruns music and puts it completely in the background, in Tyagaraja the two have received a proportionate blending and harmony to theadvan- tage of both.

Tyagaraja seems to have lost his parents while he was yet a boy of fourteen years. From that time onwards his life was one of strife and struggle. This phase of his troubles finds expression again and again in his songs. His difficulties with his elder brother seem to have haunted him throughout his life. Possessed of unbending independence, he spurned the offers of service at the courts of kings. He set his face

only for his divine master Ramachandra. The times were troublous and he must have led a very precarious existence indeed. But trouble and tribulation are the very conditions in which great souls take their nurture and rise to heights of. glory at which common people below can only raise their eyes in wonder and acmiration.

Tyagaraja seems to have been very irritable in his temperament and never tolerated any insolent remarks. In his time, other musicians gained the patronage of the rulers and flourished in an earthly sense. Now and then they would induce him to come and exhibit his talents before their masters. Like the Telugu poet Potana of old, he disdained to stoop to such a course. His sneers at these worshippers of the stomach come out in stinging irony in some of his songs. The one purpose to which Tyagaraja set his songs was to pour out his soul's yearnings at the feet of God and to stir up men's feelings in the divine path. In both these respects his melodies have fulfilled their mission to the full. He groped his way through the dark mists of ignorance so steadfastly that he at long last came in sight of the divine effulgence. His complete self- abnegation and surrender to the divine grace has completely justified the aspiration of his parents when they gave him the name of Tyagaraja. In this success of the search for divinity, he sang in notes that attracted the attention of his hearers and led them into the path which he had trodden in the pursuit of his quest.

Tyagaraja lived a pretty long life. The esti- mates about the age when he died vary. They put this variously at 70, 75, 80, 82, 86 and 88 years. The general opinion is inclined towards accepting the last estimate of 88 years.

The number of songs that Tyagaraja compos- ed are many and can be counted by hundreds, though the exact number cannot be determined with certainty. It may be that many later compos- ers wrote songs and passed them on in his name. Some of these songs are mere strings of the names of the deity which he praised. They cannot be translated into a foreign language though they provide extreme delight to the singers thereof in the original. Some cannot be presented in a foreign garb because they are mainly meant for the musical arrangement of the sounds while the words composing them do not develop any theme or show any literary excellence. In the following pages, songs are selected in the order of development, as I conceive it, of the thoughts through which Tyagaraja's mind might have passed. Asfor the comparative excellence of the songs selected, there is room for difference of opinion. Tyagaraja's songs have come to be regarded more as master-pieces of musical com- position than as exponents both of raga and of bhava, bhava not in the musical sense but in terms of mental content. The raga portion can be admired only in the original when the song is sung, while the bhava of the pieces alone can be translated, if at all. It has been my aim in the

following translations to present the thought of Tyagaraja for the benefit of those who do not know the Telugu language and to draw to them the attention of the Telugus themselves who, through the influence of English education have forgotten to appreciate the treasures of their own language except when they are presented in English. Some of the thoughts of Tyagaraja might have undergone a little transformation in this process of transmission into a foreign tongue, but I have endeavoured to keep to the spirit, though not always to the letter of the original songs. I shall feel amply rewarded if readers find delight in this attempt of mine and are persuaded to enjoy the beauty of the originals by listening to the original songs as sung by the best exponents of the Karnataka system of music.

I have transliterated the Telugu originals in the Romanic script so that those who are not acquainted with the Telugu script may read the originals for themselves. I have not given the pieces in the Telugu characters, for the Telugus can easily find them in any standard edition of Tyagaraja's songs.

The following translations have had the benefit of being gone through in part by Kulapati Dr. J.H. Cousins, the poet and artist, who has done not a little for the revival of Indian art. I am grateful to him for his suggestions.
