30. Chapter 30

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । इति तुष्टेषु देवेषु दानवेषु हतेषु च । दामव्यालकटा दीना बभूवुर्भयविह्वलाः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti tuṣṭeṣu deveṣu dānaveṣu hateṣu ca | dāmavyālakaṭā dīnā babhūvurbhayavihvalāḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha continued:—Upon destruction of the demons, the gods were exceedingly joyous; but Dama and the other leaders of the Daityas, became immerged in sorrow and grief.

जज्वाल कुपितः क्वेति कल्पान्ताग्निरिव ज्वलन् । शम्बरः शमितानीको दामव्यालकटान्प्रति ॥ २ ॥

jajvāla kupitaḥ kveti kalpāntāgniriva jvalan | śambaraḥ śamitānīko dāmavyālakaṭānprati || 2 ||

Upon this Sambara was full of wrath, and his anger was kindled like the all destroying fire against his generals, whom he called aloud by their names and said, where are they?

शम्बरस्य भयाद्गत्वा पातालमथ सप्तमम् । दामव्यालकटास्तस्थुस्त्यक्त्वाथ निजमण्डलम् ॥ ३ ॥

śambarasya bhayādgatvā pātālamatha saptamam | dāmavyālakaṭāstasthustyaktvātha nijamaṇḍalam || 3 ||

But they fled from their abodes for fear of his ire, and hid themselves in the seventh sphere of the infernal regions.

यमस्य किङ्करा यत्र ये कालत्रासनक्षमाः । कुतूहलेन तिष्ठन्ति नरकार्णवपालकाः ॥ ४ ॥

yamasya kiṅkarā yatra ye kālatrāsanakṣamāḥ | kutūhalena tiṣṭhanti narakārṇavapālakāḥ || 4 ||

There dwelt the horrid myrmidons of death, formidable as their lord Pluto (Yama) himself; and who were glad with their charge of guarding the abyss of hell.

ते तेषामथ यातानां दत्त्वा भयमभीरवः । चिन्ता इव घनाकाराः कुमारीश्च ददुः क्रमात् ॥ ५ ॥

te teṣāmatha yātānāṃ dattvā bhayamabhīravaḥ | cintā iva ghanākārāḥ kumārīśca daduḥ kramāt || 5 ||

Dauntless warders of the hell-gate received them into their favour, and having given them shelter in the hell-pit, gave them their three maiden daughters in marriage.

तैः सार्धं नीतवन्तस्ते तत्र दामादयोऽवधिम् । दशवर्षसहस्रान्तमात्तानन्तकुवासनाः ॥ ६ ॥

taiḥ sārdhaṃ nītavantaste tatra dāmādayo'vadhim | daśavarṣasahasrāntamāttānantakuvāsanāḥ || 6 ||

They there passed in their company, a period of ten thousand years, and gave a free vent to their evil desires up to the end of their lives.

इयं मे कामिनी कन्या ममेयं प्रभुतेति च । दुरूढस्नेहबन्धानां कालस्तेषां व्यवर्तत ॥ ७ ॥

iyaṃ me kāminī kanyā mameyaṃ prabhuteti ca | durūḍhasnehabandhānāṃ kālasteṣāṃ vyavartata || 7 ||

Their time passed away in such thoughts as these, that, "this is my consort and this my daughter, and I am their lord";and they were bound together in the ties of mutual affections as strong as the chain of death.

धर्मराजोऽथ तं देशं कदाचित्समुपाययौ । महानरककार्याणां विचारार्थं यदृच्छया ॥ ८ ॥

dharmarājo'tha taṃ deśaṃ kadācitsamupāyayau | mahānarakakāryāṇāṃ vicārārthaṃ yadṛcchayā || 8 ||

It happened on one occasion that yama said:—the god of retributive justice, gave his call to that spot, in order to survey the state of affairs in the doleful pits of hell.

अपरिज्ञातमेनं ते धर्मराजं त्रयोऽसुराः । न प्रणेमुर्विनाशाय सामान्यमिव किङ्करम् ॥ ९ ॥

aparijñātamenaṃ te dharmarājaṃ trayo'surāḥ | na praṇemurvināśāya sāmānyamiva kiṅkaram || 9 ||

The three Asuras, being unware of his rank and dignity, (by seeing him unattended with his ensigns), failed to make their obeisance to the lord of hell, by taking him to their peril as one of his servants.

अथ वैवस्वतेनैते ज्वलितासूग्रभूमिषु । विहितभ्रूपरिस्पन्दमात्रेणैव निवेशिताः ॥ १० ॥

atha vaivasvatenaite jvalitāsūgrabhūmiṣu | vihitabhrūparispandamātreṇaiva niveśitāḥ || 10 ||

Then a nod of his eyebrows, assigned to them a place in the burning furnace of hell; where they were immediately cast by the stern porters of hell gate.

तत्र ते करुणाक्रन्दाः ससुहृद्दारबन्धवः । प्रदग्धाः पर्णविटपा वृक्षा इव वनानिलैः ॥ ११ ॥

tatra te karuṇākrandāḥ sasuhṛddārabandhavaḥ | pradagdhāḥ parṇaviṭapā vṛkṣā iva vanānilaiḥ || 11 ||

There they lay burning with their wives and children, until they were consumed to death, like a straw-hut and withered trees.

स्वया वासनया जातास्तयैव क्रूरया पुनः । बन्धकर्मकराकाराः किराता राजकिङ्कराः ॥ १२ ॥

svayā vāsanayā jātāstayaiva krūrayā punaḥ | bandhakarmakarākārāḥ kirātā rājakiṅkarāḥ || 12 ||

The evil desires and wicked propensities, which they contracted in the company of the hellish train, caused their transmigration to the forms of Kiratas, for carrying on their slaughters and atrocities like the myrmidons of Yama.

तज्जन्माथ परित्यज्य जाताः श्वभ्रेषु वायसाः । तदन्ते गृध्रतां यातास्ततोऽपि शुक्लतां गताः ॥ १३ ॥

tajjanmātha parityajya jātāḥ śvabhreṣu vāyasāḥ | tadante gṛdhratāṃ yātāstato'pi śuklatāṃ gatāḥ || 13 ||

Getting rid of that birth, they were next born as ravens, and then as vultures and falcons of mountain caves.

सूकरत्वं त्रिगर्तेषु मेषत्वं पर्वतेषु च । मगधेष्वथ कीटत्वं बभ्रुस्ते च कुबुद्धयः ॥ १४ ॥

sūkaratvaṃ trigarteṣu meṣatvaṃ parvateṣu ca | magadheṣvatha kīṭatvaṃ babhruste ca kubuddhayaḥ || 14 ||

They were then transformed to the forms of hogs in the land of Trigarta, and then as mountain rams in Magadha, and afterwards of heinous reptiles in caves and holes.

अनुभूयेतरामन्यां चित्रां योनिपरम्पराम् । अद्य मत्स्याः स्थिता राम काश्मीरारण्यपल्वले ॥ १५ ॥

anubhūyetarāmanyāṃ citrāṃ yoniparamparām | adya matsyāḥ sthitā rāma kāśmīrāraṇyapalvale || 15 ||

Thus after passing successively into a variety of other forms, they are now lying as fishes in the wood-land lakes of Kashmir.

दावाग्निक्वथिताल्पाल्पपङ्ककल्पाम्बुपायिनः । न म्रियन्ते न जीवन्ति जरज्जम्बालजर्जराः ॥ १६ ॥

dāvāgnikvathitālpālpapaṅkakalpāmbupāyinaḥ | na mriyante na jīvanti jarajjambālajarjarāḥ || 16 ||

Being burnt in hell fire at first, they have now their respite in the watery lake, and drink its filthy water, whereby they neither die nor live to their hearts content.

विचित्रयोनिसंरम्भमनुभूय पुनःपुनः । भूत्वा भूत्वा पुनर्नष्टास्तरङ्गा जलधाविव ॥ १७ ॥

vicitrayonisaṃrambhamanubhūya punaḥpunaḥ | bhūtvā bhūtvā punarnaṣṭāstaraṅgā jaladhāviva || 17 ||

Having thus passed over and over into various births, and being transformed again and again to be reborn on earth, they are rolling like waves of the sea to all eternity.

भवजलधिगतास्ते वासनातन्तुनुन्नास्तृणमिव चिरमूढा देहरूपैस्तरङ्गैः । उपशममुपयाता राम नाद्याप्यनन्तं परिकलय महत्त्वं दारुणं वासनायाः ॥ १८ ॥

bhavajaladhigatāste vāsanātantununnāstṛṇamiva ciramūḍhā deharūpaistaraṅgaiḥ | upaśamamupayātā rāma nādyāpyanantaṃ parikalaya mahattvaṃ dāruṇaṃ vāsanāyāḥ || 18 ||

Thus like their endless desires, they have been eternally rolling like weeds in the ocean of the earth; and there is no end of their pains until the end of their desires.
