37. Chapter 37

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । इच्छाविषविकारस्य वियोगं योगनामकम् । शान्तये श्रृणु भूयोऽपि पूर्वमुक्तमपि स्फुटम् ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | icchāviṣavikārasya viyogaṃ yoganāmakam | śāntaye śrṛṇu bhūyo'pi pūrvamuktamapi sphuṭam || 1 ||

Arguments said:—

Arguments to show that the world is no production of Divine will or volition, but a reproduction of Brahma himself.

Vasishtha continued:—Hear me explain to you more fully, O Rama! what I have already told you in brief, regarding the treatment of the malady of desire, which forms also an article of the practice of yoga asceticism.

आत्मनो व्यतिरिक्तं चेद्विद्यते तदिहेच्छया । इष्यतामसति त्वेतत्स्वात्मान्यत्वं किमिष्यते ॥ २ ॥

ātmano vyatiriktaṃ cedvidyate tadihecchayā | iṣyatāmasati tvetatsvātmānyatvaṃ kimiṣyate || 2 ||

Tell me if the will is anything, beside the soul in which it subsists; and if it is nothing apart from the soul, how do you wish to attribute an agency to it, other than that of the soul?
