Verse १

yadi manyase suvedeti dabhramevāpi nūnaṁ tvaṁ vettha brahmaṇo rūpam |yadasya tvaṁ yadasya deveṣvatha nu mīmāṁsyameva te manye viditam ||

If thou thinkest that thou knowest It well, little indeed dost thou know the form of the Brahman. That of It which is thou, that of It which is in the gods, this thou hast to think out. I think It known. यदि - yadi - if | सुवेद - suveda - knowest It well | इति - iti - thus | मन्यसे - manyase - thou thinkest | नूनम् - nūnam - surely | त्वम् - tvam - dost thou | दभ्रम् - dabhram - very little | एव - eva - indeed | अपि - api - also | रूपम् - rūpam - the form | वेत्थ - vettha - know | अपि - api - also | च - ca - and | देवेषु - deveṣu - in the gods | अस्य - asya - of It | यत् - yat - that which | एव - eva - surely | अथ - atha - this | नु - nu - indeed | ते - te - thou | मीमांस्यम् - mīmāṁsyam - hast to think out | एव - eva - alone | मन्ये - manye - I think | वीदितम् - vīditam - (It) known |

Verse २

nāhaṁ manye suvedeti no na vedeti veda ca |yo nastadveda tadveda no na vedeti veda ca ||

I think not that I know It well and yet I know that It is not unknown to me. He of us who knows It, knows That; he knows that It is not unknown to him. अहम् - aham - I | सुवेद - suveda - know (It) well | इति - iti - thus | न - na - not | मन्ये - manye - think | न - na - not | वेद - veda - know | इति - iti - thus | न - na - not | वेद - veda - know | च - ca - and | नः - naḥ - among us | यः - yaḥ - who | न - na - not | उ - u - indeed | न - na - not | वेद - veda - knows | वेद - veda - knows | इति - iti - thus | च - ca - and | तत् - tat - that | वेद - veda - knows | सः - saḥ - he | तत् - tat - that | वेद - veda - knows |

Verse ३

yasyāmataṁ tasya mataṁ mataṁ yasya na veda saḥ |avijñātaṁ vijānatāṁ vijñātamavijānatām ||

He by whom It is not thought out, has the thought of It; he by whom It is thought out, knows It not. It is unknown to the discernment of those who discern of It, by those who seek not to discern of It, It is discerned. यस्य - yasya - by whom | अमतम् - amatam - It is not thought out | तस्य - tasya - he | मतम् - matam - has the thought of It | यस्य - yasya - by whom | मतम् - matam - It is thought out | सः - saḥ - he | न वेद - na veda - knows It not | विजानताम् - vijānatām - (to the discernment) of those who discern of It | अविज्ञातम् - avijñātam - It is unknown | अविजानताम् - avijānatām - by those who seek not to discern of It | विज्ञातम् - vijñātam - It is discerned |

Verse ४

pratibodhaviditaṁ matamamṛtatvaṁ hi vindate |ātmanā vindate vīryaṁ vidyayā vindate'mṛtam ||

When It is known by perception that reflects It, then one has the thought of It, for one finds immortality; by the self one finds the force to attain and by the knowledge one finds immortality. प्रतिबोधविदितम् - pratibodhaviditam - known by perception that reflects | मतम् - matam - has the thought (of It) | हि - hi - since / for | अमृतत्वम् - amṛtatvam - immortality | विन्दते - vindate - one finds | आत्मना - ātmanā - by the self | वीर्यम् - vīryam - the force (to attain) | विन्दते - vindate - one finds | विद्यया - vidyayā - by the knowledge | अमृतम् - amṛtam - immortality | विन्दते - vindate - one finds |

Verse ५

iha cedavedīdatha satyamasti | na cedihāvedīnmahatī vinaṣṭiḥ |bhūteṣu bhūteṣu vicitya dhīrāḥ | pretyāsmāllokādamṛtā bhavanti ||

If here one comes to that knowledge, then one truly is; if here one comes not to the knowledge, then great is the perdition. The wise distinguish That in all kinds of becomings and they pass forward from this world and become immortal. इह - iha - here | अवेदीत् - avedīt - (one) comes to that knowledge | चेत् - cet - if | अथ - atha - then | सत्यम् अस्ति - satyam asti - one truly is | इह - iha - here | न अवेदीत् - na avedīt - comes not to the knowledge | चेत् - cet - if | महती - mahatī - (then) great | विनष्टिः - vinaṣṭiḥ - is the perdition | धीराः - dhīrāḥ - the wise | भूतेषु भूतेषु - bhūteṣu bhūteṣu - in all kinds of becomings | विचित्य - vicitya - distinguishing (That) | अस्मात् लोकात् - asmāt lokāt - from this world | प्रेत्य - pretya - having passed forward | अमृताः - amṛtāḥ - immortal | भवन्ति - bhavanti - (they) become |
