याच्यमानस् तु यो दात्रा निक्षेपं न प्रयच्छति । दण्ड्यः स राज्ञा दाप्यश् च नष्टे दाप्यश् च तत्समम् ॥

yācyamānas tu yo dātrā nikṣepaṃ na prayacchati | daṇḍyaḥ sa rājñā dāpyaś ca naṣṭe dāpyaś ca tatsamam ||

One who, being requested, fails to deliver a deposited item is liable to be corrected by the ruler and must compensate fully as if he caused its loss.

यश् चार्थं साधयेत् तेन निक्षेप्तुरननुज्ञया।
तत्रापि दण्ड्यः स भवेत् तच् च सोदयमावहेत् ॥

yaś cārthaṃ sādhayet tena nikṣeptur ananujñayā | tatrāpi daṇḍyaḥ sa bhavet tac ca sodayam āvahet ||

One who achieves purpose through unauthorized use of another's entrusted property shall incur liability and must return the benefit gained thereby.

ग्रहीतुः सह यो 'र्थेन नष्टो नष्टः स दायिनः।
दैवराजकृते तद्वन् न चेत् तज् जिह्मकारितम्॥

grahītuḥ saha yo 'rthena naṣṭo naṣṭaḥ sa dāyinaḥ | daivarājakṛte tadvan na cet taj jihmakāritam ||

That which is lost along with the receiver, by instrumental cause, is the liability of the giver; if it occurs by divine or state action, then not, unless caused by deceit.

प्रतिगृह्णाति पोगण्डं यश् च सप्रधनं नरः।
तस्याप्य् एष भवेद् धर्मः षड् एते विधयः समाः॥

pratigṛhṇāti pogaṇḍaṃ yaś ca sapradhanaṃ naraḥ | tasyāpy eṣa bhaved dharmaḥ ṣaḍ ete vidhayaḥ samāḥ ||

One who accepts a deposit and one who receives a loan—both are equally bound by Dharma. These six categories of obligations arise collectively from the same foundational truth.
