The Saṅgīta Ratnākara of Śārṅgadeva (13th century) — the most authoritative treatise of the Gāndharva Veda, the Vedic science of music and the performing arts, and the work on which both the Hindustani and Karnatic traditions rest. Its seven adhyāyas treat svara and the śruti-s, the rāga-s, the modes of composition (prakīrṇaka), the prabandha forms, tāla, the instruments (vādya), and dance (nartana).
