Verse १
dve akṣare brahmapare tvanante vidyāvidye nihite yatra gūḍhe |kṣaraṁ tvavidyā hyamṛtaṁ tu vidyā vidyāvidye īśate yastu so'nyaḥ ||
Both of these in the Transcendent, the Knowledge & the Ignorance, yea both have their hidden being in the Eternal& Infinite Who dwelleth beyond Brahman of the Veda, & are set in it for ever. But of these Ignorance dieth and Knowledge liveth for ever; and He who is master of both is other than they. V-1: Ignorance leads to the perishable. Wisdom leads to immortality. Entirely different from these is he, the imperishable, infinite, secret, Supreme Brahman, in whom exists wisdom as well as ignorance, and who governs them both.
Verse २
yo yoniṁ yonimadhitiṣṭhatyeko viśvāni rūpāṇi yonīśca sarvāḥ |ṛṣiṁ prasūtaṁ kapilaṁ yastamagre jñānairbibharti jāyamānaṁ ca paśyet ||
He being One entereth upon womb & womb, yea upon all forms of being and upon all wombs of creatures. This was He that of old filled with many sorts of Knowledge Kapila, the seer, after his mother bore him; yea He saw Kapila shaping. V-2: He alone presides over Nature in all aspect, and controls every form and every cause of production. He witnesses the birth of the first born seer of golden colour and nourishes him with wisdom.
Verse ३
ekaika jālaṁ bahudhā vikurvannasminkṣetre saṁharatyeṣa devaḥ |bhūyaḥ sṛṣṭvā patayastatheśaḥ sarvādhipatyaṁ kurute mahātmā ||
God weaveth Him one net or He weaveth Him another and He maketh it of manifold meshes & casteth it abroad in this field of the body; then He draweth it in again. Also He created Yatis, great Seekers, & thus the Mighty Mind wieldeth the sceptre of His universal Lordship. V-3: Differentiating each genus into its species, and each species into its members, the Supreme Being withdraws them once more into their own ground. Again, bringing forth the agents of creation, the Great Self holds sway over them all.
Verse ४
sarvā diśa ūrdhvamadhaśca tiryakprakāśayanbhrājate yadvanaḍvān |evaṁ sa devo bhagavānvareṇyo yonisvabhāvānadhitiṣṭhatyekaḥ ||
The Sun riseth & driveth the world's wain, then he blazethillumining all the regions and above and below and the level grow one lustre, even so this glorious & shining God, being One, entereth upon & ruleth nature that clingeth to the womb, to each womb its nature. V-4: Just as the sun shines lighting up all space above, below and across, even so does that one adorable God, the repository of all goodness and greatness, preside over everything that has the nature of a cause.
Verse ५
yacca svabhāvaṁ pacati viśvayoniḥ pācyāṁśca sarvānpariṇāmayedyaḥ |sarvametadviśvamadhitiṣṭhatyeko guṇāṁśca sarvānviniyojayed yaḥ ||
For He who is theWomb of theWorld bringeth each nature to its perfection and He matureth all those that are yet to be perfected. He indwelleth&presideth over all this His world and setteth all the modes of Nature to their workings. V-5: He who is the one source of the world brings out everything out of His own Nature, and leads creatures to perfection according to their deserts, and endows each being with its distinguishing characteristic. Thus he presides over the whole universe.
Verse ६
tadvedaguhyopaniṣatsu gūḍhaṁ tadbrahmā vedate brahmayonim |ye pūrvaṁdevā ṛṣayaśca tadviduste tanmayā amṛtā vai babhūvuḥ ||
This is that secret mystery which is hidden in Upanishads; for the Upanishad is the secret of the Veda. This is that which Brahma knoweth for the Womb of the Eternal and the older Gods and the sages who knew of This, became This & were immortal. V-6: He lies hidden in the Upanishads, which form the essence of the Vedas. Him the Hiranyagarbha knows as the source of Himself and the Vedas. Those gods and seers who realized Him in former days became identified with Him, and verily became immortal.
Verse ७
guṇānvayo yaḥ phalakarmakartā kṛtasya tasyaiva sa copabhoktā |sa viśvarūpastriguṇastrivartmā prāṇādhipaḥ saṁcarati svakarmabhiḥ ||
There isOne whomaketh works and their fruits to them, for the moods of Nature cleave to Him; this is He that enjoyeth the works He hath done; and the World is His body and He hath three modes of His natures & the roads of His travel are likewise three. Lo, the Master of Life, by the momentum of His own works He moveth in the centuries. V-7: Only he who gets attached to the pleasurable qualities of things does work for the sake of its fruits, and enjoys the fruits of his own deeds. Though really the master of the senses, he becomes bound by the three Gunas, and assuming various forms, wanders about through the three paths as a result of his own deeds.
Verse ८
aṅguṣṭhamātro ravitulyarūpaḥ saṅkalpāhaṅkārasamanvito yaḥ |buddherguṇenātmaguṇena caiva ārāgramātro hyaparo'pi dṛṣṭaḥ ||
His size is as the size of a man's thumb but His aspect as the Sun in its glory; and He hath Volition and He hath Personality; but there is another whom we see by virtue of the Understanding & by virtue of the Spirit for the point of a cobbler's awl is not finer to vision. V-8: Subtle as the point of a goad, and pure, effulgent and infinite like the sun, He alone is seen assuming as another the size of a thumb on account of the finiteness of the heart (in which He appears), and associating Himself with egoism and Sankalpa on account of the limitations of the intellect.
Verse ९
bālāgraśatabhāgasya śatadhā kalpitasya ca |bhāgo jīvaḥ sa vijñeyaḥ sa cānantyāya kalpate ||
Take thou the hundredth part of the point of a hair, divide it into a hundred parts again; then as is a part of this hundredth part of a hundredth, such shalt thou find this Spirit in man, if thou seek to separate Him; yet 'tis this in thee that availeth towards Infinity. V-9:That individual soul is as subtle as a hairpoint divided and sub-divided hundreds of times. Yet he is potentially infinite. He has to be known.
Verse
Not woman is He, nor man either, nor yet sexless; but whatsoever body He take, that confineth&preservethHim. V-10: He is neither female, nor male, nor neuter. Whatever body he assumes, he becomes identified with that.
Verse
saṅkalpanasparśanadṛṣṭimohairgrāsāṁbuvṛṣṭyā catmavivṛddhijanma |karmānugānyanukrameṇa dehī sthāneṣu rūpāṇyabhisamprapadyate ||
As body is born and groweth by food and drink and plenty, so also the Spirit in body progressively attaineth to successive forms in their fit places-by the allurements of sight, by the witcheries of touch, by the magic of volition, for according to his works he progresseth and his forms shape themselves to his works. V-11: By desire, contact, sight and delusion, the embodied soul assumes successively various forms in various places according to his deeds, just as the body grows nourished by showers of food and drink.
Verse
sthūlāni sūkṣmāṇi bahūni caiva rūpāṇi dehī svaguṇairvṛṇoti |kriyāguṇairātmaguṇaiśca teṣāṁ saṁyogaheturaparo'pi dṛṣṭaḥ ||
Forms gross and forms subtle, forms many,-the Spirit in body evolveth them all by his own nature in its working; by the law of action of his works & the law of action of the Spirit in man, by these he evolveth them. But there is Another in Whom we behold Cause whereby all these meet together. V-12: The embodied self chooses many forms, gross and subtle, based on the qualities belonging to himself, to the actions, and to the mind. The cause of their combination is found to be still another.
Verse
anādyanantaṁ kalilasya madhye viśvasya sraṣṭhāramanekarūpam |viśvasyaikaṁ pariveṣṭitāraṁ jñātvā devaṁ mucyate sarvapāśaiḥ ||
Without beginning, without end in the welter and the chaos, who createth the world by taking many figures & as the One girdeth & encompasseth it. He is the Lord & if thou know Him thou shalt break free from all kinds of bondage. V-13: Realizing Him who is without beginning or end, who creates the cosmos in the midst of chaos, who assumes many forms, and who alone envelops everything, one becomes free from all fetters.
Verse
bhāvagrāhyamanīḍākhyaṁ bhāvābhāvakaraṁ śivam |kalāsargakaraṁ devaṁ ye viduste jahustanum ||
Shiva the Master of all becomings and not -becomings and from Him this whole creation floweth and it is only one part of Shiva; but He is not named after any nest of the wing`ed Spirit, and the heart alone can apprehend Him. They who know Shiva, the Blessed One, abandon body for ever. V-14: That Supreme Divinity who created both Life and Matter, who is the source of all arts and sciences, who can be intuited by a pure and devoted mind - realizing Him, the blissful the incorporeal and the nameless, one is freed from further embodiment.
