The Blue-Throated One.

சிவபெருமான் நஞ்சைத் திருக்கண்டத்தில் நிறுத்தியரு ளியது சகல புவனங்களிலுமுள்ள எல்லா ஆன்மாக்களும், பேரிடரை 居க்கும் தமது பெருங்கருண்த் திறத்தை உணர்ந்து உய்யும் பொருட்டாம். *

Lord Shiva graciously retained the poison in His sacred throat so that all souls in all the worlds, recognizing His immense compassion in bearing the great calamity that would otherwise affect them, might attain salvation. *

பெரியபுராணம்.

Periyapuranam.

“புவனங்க ளுய்ய வையர் பொங்குநஞ் சுண்ண யாஞ்செய் தவநின்று தடுத்த தென்னத் தகைந்து தான் தரித்தடேன்று சிவனெந்தை கண்டந் தன்னைத் திருநீல கண்ட மென்பார்.”

“To save the worlds, when I drank the surging poison, you stopped it from descending, saying, ‘I shall undertake this penance’; thus, having compassionately borne it in your throat, my father Shiva—his throat became sacred blue—is called Neelakanta.”

சிவபெருமான் ஆலாகலத்தை அமுது செய்தருளியது அரிபிரமேந்திராதி தேவர்களெல்லாம் இறவாதிருக்கவேண்டு மென்னும் பெருங்கருணை உடையவர் என்பதை விள க்குவதாம். அச்செயல் இகர கேவர்களால் நிறைவேற்ற முடியாத அரிய செயல்களை நிறைவேற்றியருளுதலாகிய அப்பெருமானது பேராண்மையைக் குறிப்பதுமாம். அரிபிரமாதி தேவர்கள் சமஸ்தரும் மரித்தலுடையவர் என்பதும் சிவபெருமான் ஒரு வரே மரியாதவர் என்பதும் ஆலாகலத்தை அமுது செய்தமை யாற் பெறப்பட்ட மற்றோருண்மையாகும்.

The fact that Lord Shiva graciously drank the alakala poison explains that He possesses immense compassion, wishing that all the gods, beginning with Hari and Brahma, might remain immortal. It also signifies the great valor of that Lord, who graciously accomplishes deeds that are difficult for these gods to perform. Another truth derived from His drinking the alakala poison is that all the gods, beginning with Hari and Brahma, are subject to death, whereas Lord Shiva alone is beyond death.
