21. The Form of Mantra
Passage 1
The Form of Mantra.
Passage 2
The Agamas declare that mantras are forms of the Supreme Lord and possess a distinctive relationship with Him. This is because, in pure Māyā, Śiva-Śakti remains united in a manner difficult for the mind to comprehend; because they arise from that pure Māyā; and because, being empowered by Śiva-Śakti, they bestow the fruits of enjoyment and liberation upon souls who worship through Śiva-pūjā, fire rituals, japa, and other practices.
Passage 3
Those who perform official duties under the king’s command may possess authority within those offices, but since that authority is not independent, their authority is not like the king’s sovereign authority. Similarly, although the other gods possess authority in relation to the mantras, it is not independent authority for them; rather, the mantras belong distinctively and exclusively to Hara.
Passage 4
Among the Lord’s mantra forms, the form of the Pañcabrahma mantras is the most excellent. The reason for singling it out and explaining it thus is that the five mantras beginning with Īśāna arose in pure Māyā before all other mantras and serve as the source of the remaining mantras. They are called the Lord’s head, face, heart, secret part, and sacred feet. The five mantras beginning with Īśāna are the Śaktis that perform the five divine acts, beginning with grace. ‡ The Āgama states that the heart is true knowledge; the head is eternal contentment of the highest order; the crest is absolute self-mastery; the armour is protection; the eye is all-knowingness; and the weapon is the powerful Śakti that destroys ignorance.
Passage 5
The word mantra means “that which protects the one who meditates.” Therefore, the term mantra properly applies to Śiva and Śiva-Śakti, which are the denotative realities possessing the nature of protecting the meditator. Nevertheless, since there is no difference between the denotative and denoting terms, it is applied, by convention, to the denoting term as well. Thus, mantras are of two kinds: the denotative mantra and the denoting mantra.
Passage 6
The syllable “Si-Va-Sa-Thi,” which is the vachiya-mantra of Lord Shiva, is His true form. That Shiva Shakti, like fire within wood, abides in the vachaka-mantra and bestows benefits upon the practitioner. Therefore, through Shiva Shakti, Lord Shiva has a connection with the vachaka-mantra; and because of that connection, the vachaka-mantra is an upachara form addressed to Lord Shiva for the practitioner’s meditation and worship.
Passage 7
Therefore, mantras were not composed by gods, sages, or human beings. It is said that even those gods and others earn merit by pronouncing them with अक्ष ara purity, and incur sin by pronouncing them without such purity. Since Shiva Shakti graciously brought forth the mantras while abiding in pure maya, and since Shiva Shakti presides over each of the mantras, the mantras acquired the power to grant practitioners the benefits they desire. “The mantras are formed in harmony with the Agamas”—these are the sacred words of Tirujnana Sambandar.
