Passage 1

The manifest form.

Passage 2

When Sivaperuman is united with the three kinds of Shakti—Ichcha Shakti, Jnana Shakti, and Kriya Shakti—the divine body produced by Shakti’s activity, known as the Arul Tirumeni, comes into being. When Shiva is united with Jnana Shakti, he possesses the Nishkala Tirumeni. He is called Nishkala Shiva and Laya Shiva. [Nishkala—the formless; the state of Laya—the Shiva Tattva.]

Passage 3

Kandha Puranam.

Passage 4

When Shiva is equally united with Jnana Shakti and Kriya Shakti, he possesses the Aruvuruvam Tirumeni. He is called Sadasiva, Udyukta, Bhoga Shiva, and Nishkala-Sakala Shiva. [The state of enjoyment—the Sadakhya Tattva.]

Passage 5

The manifestation in which Jnana Shakti is diminished and Kriya Shakti is increased is the Uravam Tirumeni. That form is called Maheshvara, Pravritta, Adhikara Shiva, and Sakala Shiva. [The state of authority—the Ishvara Tattva.] There is no difference among Shiva, Sadasiva, and Maheshvara. These distinctions are spoken of figuratively as arising from differences in the functions of Shakti.

Passage 6

The Agamas state that, since Siva and Sakti exist as the locus into which everything is absorbed, they are called Laya; Sadasiva, because he brings forth the other manifestations, is called Bhoga; and Mahesvara and Suddhavidya are called Adhikara, because the twenty-five manifestations arise in Mahesvara, while Brahma and Vishnu arise and perform their functions in Suddhavidya. Therefore, the body that absorbs both these universes—the verbal universe consisting of mantra, pada, and varna, and the material universe consisting of tattva, bhuvana, and kala—is called Aruvam; the bodies that manifest are called Aruvuruvam and Uruvam. These three are the derivative forms of Paramasiva.

Passage 7

The reason Lord Siva graciously assumes these three kinds of bodies is his compassion, by which he performs the five cosmic acts, removes the bonds of souls, and grants them liberation.

Passage 8

What reason could there be for him, who is beyond comparison, to assume a solitary form together with a serpent, except his immense grace, by which he performs those acts, completely removes the bonds of the ancient souls, and thereafter bestows liberation?

Passage 9

Paramasiva is called Siva in his true nature, in which he remains untouched by anything and shines by his own light; he is called Sakti by virtue of remaining one with, distinct from, and inseparable from souls; and he is called Pati by virtue of performing the five cosmic acts.
