32. The Eight Attributes
Passage 1
The Eight Attributes.
Passage 2
The attributes belonging to the Lord, who is thus described as the author of the five divine acts, are eight: being self-dependent, possessing a pure body, possessing innate consciousness, possessing complete knowledge, being naturally free from the bonds, possessing boundless grace, possessing infinite power, and possessing limitless bliss.* Of these, being self-dependent is called svātantrya; possessing a pure body is called viśuddha-deha; possessing innate consciousness is called nirāmaya-ātmā; possessing complete knowledge is called sarvajñatva; being naturally free from the bonds is called anādi-bodha; possessing boundless grace is called alupta-śakti; possessing infinite power is called ananta-śakti; and possessing limitless bliss is called tṛpti. Among these eight attributes, innate consciousness is included under being naturally free from the bonds, and possessing a pure body is included under possessing boundless grace; thus, they are also said to be six. Understand that the presence of natural freedom from the bonds entails innate consciousness, and that the presence of boundless grace entails the existence of a body of knowledge. Since Lord Shiva possesses these attributes, He is called Śuddha-ṣāḍguṇya, the possessor of the six pure attributes.
Passage 3
Now, these eight attributes are comprised within the three—existence, consciousness, and bliss. How so? At all times,
Passage 4
That which remains of a single nature is Sat. Therefore, being self-dependent is included under Sat; possessing boundless bliss is included under Ananda; being endowed with a pure body, possessing innate awareness, possessing perfect knowledge, being naturally free from the bonds, possessing boundless grace, and possessing infinite power—these six are included under Chit.
Passage 5
How, then, is it appropriate to call Lord Shiva, who possesses these eight qualities, “Gunatitan” and “Nirguna”? Qualities are of two kinds: the qualities of Maya and the qualities of knowledge. Among these, the qualities of Maya are of three kinds: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. These three qualities occur in souls that are bound by bodies, instruments, worlds, and experiences, which are effects of Maya. These three qualities, which differ from one another, serve as causes of bondage. Since the Lord is beyond the qualities of Maya, it is appropriate to call Him “Gunatitan” and “Nirguna,” signifying that He is beyond these three qualities. Therefore, the conclusion is that Paramashiva possesses the quality of knowledge.
Passage 6
Now, why is this quality of knowledge said to be of eight kinds? It is because these eight characteristics are indispensable and essential to Shiva.
Passage 7
(1) The quality called self-dependence, or Svatantrata—the ability to accomplish whatever is conceived exactly as conceived—is necessary both to bestow upon souls the pleasures and pains that are the fruits of their karma and to grant liberation to souls whose two kinds of karma have become equalized.
Passage 8
(2) For the Lord who acts in this manner, if His form were corporeal, it could not be all-pervading and omniscient. Therefore, a pure body called the body of consciousness, whose nature is to be all-pervading and to know everything, is required. It is called the form of consciousness.
Passage 9
(3) Even if it were a form of consciousness, if it were capable of knowing and being known like the consciousness that is the soul, then, since it would not possess sovereign independence, a self-aware nature called nirāmaya, whose very nature is to know by itself, would be required.
Passage 10
(4) Even if it were free from impurities, if it possessed only limited knowledge like the liberated soul freed from impurities, the five divine acts would not be possible. Therefore, omniscience, namely complete knowledge, would be required.
Passage 11
(5) If omniscience were found in the liberated soul freed from impurities as though it were a stone, then calling it innate awareness would be inappropriate. Therefore, the beginningless knowledge called kalā, which is naturally free from the bonds, would be required.
Passage 12
(6) Even though He is free from bonds, unless He possesses grace, He cannot bestow grace; therefore, the power called Boundless Grace † is required.
Passage 13
(7) Even though He possesses grace, since He must perform various kinds of actions according to the karma of each of the countless souls, the power called Infinite Power is required.
Passage 14
(8) Even though He possesses Infinite Power, He cannot bring the souls to the fullness of bliss unless He is endowed with complete bliss, which does not diminish as it is bestowed and bestowed without causing Him any suffering; therefore, the satisfaction called Boundless Bliss is required.

Passage 26
In this way, it becomes clear that these eight attributes are qualities inherent in Lord Shiva.
Passage 27
Thus, Lord Shiva, possessing such unsurpassed qualities as perfect knowledge and the like,* whose sacred body consists of the immeasurable grace bestowed without expectation of anything in return upon souls, and who, in all the actions He performs, acts with the welfare of souls in mind rather than His own benefit, and who is the sole Lord of all the worlds, bearing the sacred name “Shankara,”† is alone capable of graciously bestowing lasting bliss upon souls.
Passage 28
Lord Shiva, as the Divine Physician, administers the medicine called divine grace to those who worship Him with unwavering true love, removes the disease called the impurity of ego, which has been the cause of birth from time immemorial, and bestows liberation. That bliss of moksha alone is eternal wealth. If one worships Paramashiva with love, there is no doubt that one will attain that supreme abode.
