Passage 1

Definition of the Soul.

Passage 2

The world is an effect. All effects are meant to serve a purpose. The world, being an effect, is of no use to the Lord, who is without limitation; nor is it without purpose, since it was created by an agent possessing the highest qualities. Therefore, there are those who are entitled to derive benefit from it; they are called souls.

Chetana — that which possesses consciousness. Gross consciousness — the individual soul. Subtle consciousness — the soul. Supremely subtle consciousness — Shiva. Gross consciousness — knowing through the assistance of something else. Supremely subtle consciousness — knowing by itself. The soul in its bound state is the individual soul, and in its liberated state it is the soul. Although grace operates in the state of liberation, since there is no otherness, the soul becomes subtle.

† Although the soul is all-pervasive, when it apprehends one thing, it does not apprehend another; that is, when it apprehends the terrestrial world, it does not apprehend heaven and hell. Even within the terrestrial world, when it apprehends one body, it does not apprehend another body; and even while remaining associated with one body, when it apprehends one sense, it does not apprehend another sense. Therefore, the soul is said to be of limited pervasion.
