34. The Nature of Pāśa
Passage 1
The Nature of Pāśa.
Passage 2
That by which souls are bound is called pāśa.*
Passage 3
In this world, one who is not subject to any form of restraint is understood to possess independence, while one who is subject to restraint is understood to be dependent. Since souls are unable to obtain what they do not want and are unable to obtain what they do want, it is clear that they are dependent; and since they are dependent, it is equally clear that they are bound. That which binds them in this way is pāśa.
Passage 4
Pāśa, mala, and kaḷai are synonymous terms.
Passage 5
Pāśa is of five kinds: āṇava, māyā, karma, māyēya, and tirōtāyi.
Passage 6
Of these five bonds, the first, mala, is called āṇava because it diminishes the all-pervasive soul’s powers of knowledge, desire, and action to an atomic state. Its essential nature is the form of profound, impenetrable darkness. Its function is to produce ignorance in souls. In kevala, causing ignorance in souls is said to be the distinguishing characteristic of the āṇava bond. Although it is called a distinguishing characteristic, it is essentially identical with its inherent nature. In sakala, producing distorted awareness through the instruments is said to be its general nature.
Passage 7
Paśa—binding; a = instrumental-object suffix.香
Passage 8
Anava is eternal, pervasive,* like the dross adhering to metal when heated,† beginninglessly mingled with souls, unitary, binding them according to their karma, differing from one soul to another, concealing the souls’ desires, knowledge, and actions, the root cause of embodied beings undergoing states of experience, and an insentient entity possessing many different powers that withdraw within their respective periods of time.
Passage 9
Just as an eye covered by a film of dirt, though standing in the presence of the sun, is plunged into darkness because the film obstructs the sun’s light, so the soul bound by this Anava impurity, though it has stood from beginningless time in the presence of the Lord, is naturally capable of knowing only when instructed in due order, but cannot know unless instructed from beginningless time. Because it cannot thus know, it loses the knowledge bestowed by Lord Shiva and sinks into the ignorance produced by the Anava impurity; therefore, that Anava impurity becomes a bondage for the soul.

*It is called pervasive because of its nature of being mingled with many souls.
Passage 13
-
-
“The analogy of tarnish on copper is intended to illustrate that the impurity is beginningless. The tarnish on copper exists as one with it naturally and without beginning. The impurity is likewise. There is no cause for the tarnish to have appeared on the copper. In the same way, the soul is also beginningless; because it is associated with the impurity, it has become impure. Shiva is pure because He is beginningless and free from impurity.” (Siddhanta Saravali.)

Although tarnish exists naturally with copper, it is removed by a chemical agent; similarly, although the anava impurity arises together with souls, it is removed by the power of Shiva.

The impurity of egoity, in the souls called Sakalars, remains joined with the instruments beginning with desire during the Sakala state and makes them perform seven kinds of actions beginning with delusion. These are delusion, arrogance, desire, anxiety, anguish, and affliction. Among them,

The remarkable point is this: It causes us to lose the awareness that Paramashiva bestows upon us the fruits of all kinds of good and evil deeds through the three modes beginning with the divine mode, and makes us think, “He humbled me and sustained me; I humbled Him and sustained Him.”
