37. The four kinds of speech

Passage 1

The four kinds of speech.

Passage 2

For the purpose of removing the concealment caused by the anava mala, through the divine grace of Lord Shiva, the vāk—which are effects of Pure Maya—come and unite with the soul. The soul’s knowledge becomes manifest through association with these vāk. Anava conceals itself so that souls may not recognize and unite with the divine grace that brings these vāk together and bestows knowledge.

Passage 3

The manner in which souls acquire knowledge and the operation of those effects of Māyā are as follows: Serving as the cause of cognition and shining within the subtle body, the soul’s faculty of knowledge proceeds from the bindu- place manifested in the mūlādhāra, in the form of subtle speech composed of nāda, and moves to the place of impulse. There, restraining the letters from separating into distinct forms, it remains once again in a subtle form, serving as the cause of indeterminate cognition. In this state, it is called Paiśantī.

Passage 4

Then that speech is impelled from there by the udāna breath and reaches the region of the heart. There, through the action of the udāna breath

Passage 5

the letters separate into distinct forms and manifest in a subtle form. Remaining as far as the region of the throat, it serves as the cause of the determinate cognition inwardly experienced by the speaker as a soft sound. In this state, it is called Madhyamā.

Passage 6

Then that speech, propelled upward by the prāṇa breath, strikes the organs known as the teeth, lips, tongue, and palate, undergoes modification, and disperses, becoming audible both to oneself and to others and serving as the cause of determinate cognition. In this state, it is called Vaikharī.

Passage 7

Vaikhari is of two kinds: subtle Vaikhari, which is audible only to oneself, and gross Vaikhari, which is audible both to oneself and to others.

Passage 8

The four forms of speech—Sukshma, Pashyanti, Madhyama, and Vaikhari—are set in motion by Kriya Shakti. Sukshma rests upon Shantyatita Kala, Pashyanti upon Shanti Kala, Madhyama upon Vidya Kala, subtle Vaikhari upon Pratishtha Kala, and gross Vaikhari upon Nivritti Kala as their respective bases.

Passage 9

Thus, these four forms of speech, becoming fivefold, shine in the form of sound: Sukshma in the Tattva of Shiva, Pashyanti in the Tattva of Shakti, Madhyama in the Sadashiva Tattva, subtle Vaikhari in the Maheshvara Tattva, and gross Vaikhari in the Tattva known as Shuddhavidya.

Passage 10

Since these forms of speech are the cause of Savikalpa Jnana, which is discriminative knowledge, they are indispensable to souls. Without speech, there can be no manifest knowledge. The knowledge arising through it is knowledge that apprehends worldly objects. Therefore, these forms of speech, which are the cause of Savikalpa cognition, constitute a superior bondage. Hence, if a person discerns and removes them as being different from himself, and the supreme knowledge beyond them manifests within him, then and only then will he attain the supreme liberation that is the holy feet of Lord Shiva.

Passage 11

In the Sadashiva tattva, there are the apara nada and apara bindu. In the Ishvara tattva, there is the Pranava. * In the Shuddhavidya tattva, the fifty-one letters from akara to ksha, and the twenty-eight Agamas beginning with Kamika, exist in the form of Vaikhari.

Passage 12

The five tattvas beginning with the Shiva tattva serve respectively as the causes for the Supreme Shiva’s being known as the state of dissolution, the state of enjoyment, and the state of authority. In all these five tattvas, Lord Shiva Himself graciously performs the five cosmic acts. Those practitioners who, desiring the attainments called dissolution, enjoyment, and authority, receive initiation for practice and master the mantras, subsequently, by the grace of the Supreme Shiva, attain that world, enjoy its pleasures, and remain there until dispassion arises or until the Great dissolution occurs; thereafter, together with the Vidyeshvaras, they attain ultimate liberation.
