Bestowing benefits.

Passage 2

Karma yields its fruits not according to the order in which it was performed, but according to the order in which it ripens. Therefore, the fruits of actions performed earlier may come later, and those of actions performed later may come earlier. Some karmas are performed in this birth and, joining with those performed previously, are experienced in this very life; some actions performed in this life bear fruit in the next birth; and some actions, because they have not yet ripened, do not become available for experience in the next birth. They remain such that it is impossible to say, “They will ripen at this particular time” or “They will be experienced at that particular time,” and, having ripened at some later period, they come to be experienced in some future birth. How is this so? It is like the crops one has planted—greens, eggplant, bananas, and coconut—which yield their produce, not according to the order in which they were planted, but according to the order in which they come to fruition.

Passage 3

Out of His boundless compassion for souls, Lord Shiva accepts the good and evil they perform and bestows grace upon those who do good, while punishing those who do evil. Punishing those who have committed sins is intended to reform them and make them good; therefore, that too is an act of grace. It is like parents disciplining and correcting their children when they do not behave according to their instructions.

Passage 4

Pleasure and pain are experienced by the command of the Lord.

Passage 5

A king punishes those who do not act according to his commands by the power of his authority and confines them in prison. To those who obey his commands, he grants villages and wealth and appoints them to exercise authority under him. Through the power of his authority, he causes everyone throughout the kingdom to live and also punishes them. Likewise, the Vedas and Agamas are the commands bestowed by Lord Shiva. The prisons established by God for punishing souls that do not act according to those commands are the twenty-eight crore hells. The places where those who act according to the commands prescribed in those Vedas and Agamas live in happiness are the higher worlds, such as heaven. Yet pleasures and pains befall all souls—not only those who attain heaven and hell—by the will of the Lord.
