Passage 1

The Ninefold Distinction

Passage 2

Pure Shiva, who transcends all thirty-six tattvas, abides in each tattva and performs its respective function. Accordingly, He appears as the four formless bodies—Shiva, Shakti, Nada, and Bindu; as the one form that is both formless and formed, called Sadashiva; and as the four formed bodies—Maheshvara, Rudra, Vishnu, and Brahma. Thus, appearing as one distinct from another, He remains without difference in the three categories and performs the respective functions of each.

Siva, Sakti, Nada, Bindu, Sadashiva, Mahesa, Rudra, Vishnu, and Brahma—these nine, appearing as one within the threefold division, grant existence and act as the Guru, the dispeller of fear, and the supreme Lord, dancing as the One.

Passage 5

The mode of manifestation is as follows: Sivaperuman, inseparably united with Chit-Shakti, assumes the state of intending to act in pure Maya in order to cure souls of the disease of impurity. This is called Siva. It is known as Para-Nada. After this intention, the state in which He considers how He should act is Shakti. This is called Para- Bindu. Nada signifies sound, while Bindu signifies the symbol or point. The state in which He is united with pure Maya in order to act according to what He has previously conceived is Nada. The state in which He determines what must be done in conjunction with pure Maya is Bindu. The Nada and Bindu mentioned earlier arose at a stage not associated with pure Maya; hence they are called Para-Nada and Para-Bindu. The Nada and Bindu mentioned subsequently arose at a stage associated with pure Maya; hence they are called Apara-Nada and Apara-Bindu. Apara-Nada is also called Apara-Bindu, and Siva is also called Shakti. Thereafter, the state in which He considers what should be done in each particular way is Sadashiva. When He acts according to what He has conceived, the state in which He makes souls experience their karma—concealing the karmas that they should not experience and bestowing the qualities and defects contained in the karmas that they should experience—is Maheshvara. During that experience, the state called Sankara, which removes their weariness, is Rudra. The state that enables them to remain in order to experience their karma is Vishnu. The state in which the body, instruments, world, and objects necessary for experience are brought forth is Brahma. Since there is nothing further to be done in this regard, it is understood that it has been defined as consisting of nine distinctions.*

Passage 6

An example of these nine distinctions is as follows: Pure Shiva is like a king. Shiva is the thought that arose in that king when he wished to set the world into operation. Shakti is the thought of how it might be set into operation. Nada is the intention to select the officials who would carry out the functions contained within him. Bindu is the selection of those officials: “Let this person perform this particular task in this particular manner...”
