The Sattva guna makes one aware of objects of enjoyment; the Tamas guna creates desire for those enjoyments. The Rajas guna causes one to cling to those enjoyments. Prakriti exists not only in the form of the gunas but also in the form of consciousness. Existing in the form of the gunas and giving rise to the three gunas, it causes the soul to unite with them and remain pervaded by those gunas. When Prakriti exists in the form of consciousness and produces thoughts of enjoyment, the soul, being pervaded by the gunas, becomes aware of and desires objects of enjoyment and is immersed in them.

The Buddhi Tattva arises from Prakriti and determines the objects appropriate to the merits and demerits performed by each soul. Immersed in the delusion of pleasure, pain, and infatuation arising from those objects, it develops and sustains the soul’s functions of knowledge. The qualities of the buddhi are eight: virtue, knowledge, detachment, prosperity, unrighteousness, ignorance, non-detachment, and lack of prosperity. The state in which Rajas and Tamas are diminished and Sattva predominates is the Buddhi Tattva.

The principle of ego arises from the principle of intellect. It remains inseparably attached to the soul, becoming the root cause of its sense of individuality, fostering pride by thinking, “There is no one equal to me,” and developing attachment through the notions “I” and “mine.”

The principle of mind arises from the Taijasa ego. The mind, taking desire as its form, forms an intention regarding an object and becomes agitated. The intellect remains contemplating, “What is this?” without arriving at certainty concerning the object thought of by the mind. This intellect is merely the state of doubt, which is the function of the mind, and is not a separate principle.
