Types of instruments.

ஞானேந்திரிய கன்மேந்திரியங்கள் உடம்பின் புறத்தே நின்று தொழிற்படும் புறக்கருவிகளாம். மனம் முதலிய அந் தக் கரணங்கள் இந்திரியங்களாலே தரப்பட்ட விஷயங்களை உடம்பின் அகத்தே நின்று விடயிக்கும் உட்கருவிகளாம்.

The organs of knowledge and the organs of action are the external instruments, standing outside the body and performing their functions. The internal organs, beginning with the mind, are the inner instruments that apprehend within the body the objects conveyed by the senses.

அந்தக்கரணங்களினால் விடயிக்கப்பட்டவற்றைக் கலை வித்தை அராகம் என்னுந் தத்துவங்கள் ஆன்மாவின் இச்சா ஞானக் கிரியைகளுக்குப் பொருத்தும். ஆதலின் அவை உள்ளந்தக்கரணம் எனப்பட்டன.

The tattvas known as Kalā, Vidyā, and Rāga fit what is apprehended by the internal organs to the soul’s faculties of desire, knowledge, and action. Therefore, they are called the inner instruments.
