61. The number of impurities

Passage 1

The number of impurities.

Passage 2

The five impurities are: anava mala, the primordial impurity that has been united with every soul from beginningless time; tirodhana shakti, which, abiding with that anava impurity, greatly brings about the soul’s maturity; maya mala, said to be the cause of the body and so forth; karma mala, which expands as merit and demerit; and mayeya mala, the effect of maya, which functions as the body, instruments, world, and experiences. The wise say that one cannot attain grace until these five impurities are removed.

Passage 3

Since the effects of Pure Māyā remain pure, without being pervaded by āṇava mala, they are not counted among the impurities. The effects of Impure Māyā are the tattvas beginning with Kalā-tattva and ending with Pṛthivī, as well as the worlds and the objects within them. Although the effects of Māyā are included in Māyā, they are counted separately because of the distinction by which they bind. Māyā remains conjoined with the soul’s knowledge and deludes that knowledge. The effect of Māyā serves as the object presented to that delusion. These alone constitute the distinction.

Passage 4

When these five impurities are subsumed under three, Māyēyam is included under Māyā-mala, while Tirodhāna-śakti is included under Āṇava-mala because its function resembles that of concealment.

Passage 5

The manner in which the soul experiences the fruits of its actions.

Passage 6

The soul, being associated with the five bonds, undergoes birth and rebirth on account of its twofold karma and wanders, like a firebrand circle and a spinning top, through the three worlds—the earth, hell, and heaven—going and returning in accordance with Śivājñā.

Passage 7

Souls that have performed good deeds, immediately upon leaving the gross body, assume, along with the subtle body, a divine body called the Bhūtasāra body, and go to heaven. There, having experienced the pleasure that is the fruit of their good deeds, they return to earth and are born as human beings by virtue of the residual karma that remains without being exhausted.

Passage 8

Souls that have performed evil deeds, immediately upon leaving the gross body, assume, along with the subtle body, a suffering body called the Yātanā body, which is a material body, and go to the hells. There, having experienced the suffering that is the fruit of those evil deeds, they return to earth and are born again by virtue of the residual karma that remains without being exhausted. Apart from this, immediately upon leaving one gross body, a soul may also obtain a womb on earth itself and assume another gross body. †

Passage 9

Cittiyār 2-4-88.

Passage 10

In the section on the general nature of Civappirakācam, it is stated that the body assumed upon returning to earth is the Bhūta Pariṇāma body; the body assumed in hell is the Bhūta body; and the body assumed in heaven is the Bhūtasāra body. All three are bodies composed of the five elements.

Passage 11

The Origin of Bodies and the Total Number of Species.

Passage 12

Thus, when souls are born in accordance with the good and evil deeds they have performed themselves, the learned declare that the species of the seven kinds of births—gods, humans, animals, birds, reptiles, aquatic beings, and plants—which arise from the four forms known as aṇḍaja, svedaja, udbhijja, and jarāyuja, number eighty-four hundred thousand.

Passage 13

Of the four kinds of origin: + Aṇḍajas are born from eggs. These include snakes, frogs, crocodiles, tortoises, monitor lizards, fish, chameleons, birds, lizards, and oysters. + Svedajas are born from sweat. These include worms, insects, moths, lice, and others. Udbhijjas emerge by splitting open seeds, roots, tubers, and the like. They include trees, herbs, and creepers. § Jarāyujas arise in the womb. They include humans, gods, and four-footed animals.

Passage 14

Gods have eleven hundred thousand species, humans nine hundred thousand species, four-footed animals ten hundred thousand species, birds ten hundred thousand species, reptiles fifteen hundred thousand species, aquatic beings ten hundred thousand species, and plants nineteen hundred thousand species; thus, the total number of species is eighty-four hundred thousand. $

Passage 15

Tirugnanasambandar Swamigal. Pann—Megaragakkurinji.

Passage 16

The eighty-four hundred thousand varieties of wombs, joined with their respective forms of speech,

Passage 17

He, as the Life of the lives of all the beings created in those forms, stands there in the temple; clouds gathered upon the hills resound like drums, many peacocks dance, and bees sing.

Passage 18

In fragrant Ponni, its waters flowing, and with soft kantal flowers adorning its hands—this is Izhalai.

Passage 19

The causal body associated with the soul’s physical body.

Passage 20

The soul, veiled by the āṇava mala and existing as a pasu, is said to be in the state of kevala. Thereafter, taking pity on that soul, which suffers and grieves out of ignorance, and through the grace of Ananta Deva, it comes to possess the causal body, which is the matured portion of the impure Māyā in which it has become mingled. Since Māyā is the cause of the emergence of all bodies, it is called the causal body.

Passage 21

When it comes into possession of that body, the knowledge and activities that had been concealed begin to manifest in a general manner. That is, awareness, desire, and the capacity to act arise; yet the discernment between good and evil, the distinction between what is desired and undesired, and the understanding of how an action should be performed do not become manifest. This may be likened to the first stage in which a life that had lain unconscious begins to regain clarity.
