The Soul as Sat-Asat

சத்தாகிய சிவம் என்றுள்ளதோ, அன்றே சதசத்தா கிய ஆன்மாக்களும் உள்ளனவாய், அவ்வுயிர்களை அசத்தா கிய பாசம் பந்தித்து நிற்கும். சத்து அசத்து என்னும் இரண்டினையும் அறிவது ஆன்மாவாம். அது, சத்தாகிய சிவமூம் அன்று; அசத்தாகிய பாசமும் அன்று. அது சத்து அசத்து என்னும் அவ்விரண்டிற்கும் வேறாய், அவ்விரண் டன்பாலும் தனித்தனி கூடி, மலரின்கண் மணமானது, மலர் போல் விளங்கித் தோன்றாமலும் சூனியமல்லாமலும் அம்மலரின்கண் அடங்கித் தோன்றுவது போல சத்திலும் அசத்திலும் சார்ந்ததன் வண்ணமாய் அடங்கித் தோற்றுத லின் சதசத்தாம். சூரியன் முன் இருள் முனைத்து நில்லாத வாறு போல, சத்தின்முன் அச்த்து முனைத்து நிற்கமாட் டாததாம்.

Wherever there is Shiva, who is Sat, there are also souls, which are Sat-Asat, and the bonds, which are Asat, bind those souls. The soul is that which knows both Sat and Asat. It is neither Shiva, who is Sat, nor the bonds, which are Asat. Being distinct from both Sat and Asat, yet joining each of them separately, it is Sat-Asat because it appears by taking on the nature of whichever it is associated with, just as the fragrance in a flower is contained within the flower and manifests without being visible like the flower or being nonexistent. Just as darkness cannot stand forth before the sun, Asat cannot stand forth before Sat.
