73. Shiva is the Most Subtle Consciousness

Passage 1

Shiva is the Most Subtle Consciousness

Passage 2

The soul is grossly subtle consciousness *

Passage 3

Lord Shiva is called the supremely subtle Consciousness because He knows by Himself, without requiring the aid of any other entity. Since He removes the impurities from souls through His grace, reveals His true nature to them, and stands as their companion, He is also the supremely subtle Being.

Passage 4

For souls to exercise their knowledge, they are unable to do so without the aid of instruments and other supports in the bound state, and without the support of divine grace in the pure state. Therefore, they are called gross-subtle Consciousness. Since, after attaining such knowledge, they remain forever without perishing, they are also called gross-subtle Being.

Passage 5

The state in which souls, freed from the obstruction of bondage, know the Lord and remain as That is called subtle Consciousness. The term “gross-subtle Consciousness” is used for the soul because it knows with the aid of instruments. This is like the light of the eye, which perceives with the aid of external light.

Passage 6

The term “subtle Consciousness” is used for the soul because it knows with the support of divine grace. This is like the light of the eye, which perceives with the aid of the soul’s awareness. The term “Shiva is supremely subtle Consciousness” is used because He knows by Himself, without requiring the aid of any other entity. This is like the sun, which illuminates by itself. Thus, there is a distinction of this kind between souls and Shiva.

Passage 7

That beginningless and eternally liberated Lord Shiva, out of the compassion He has placed within souls, graciously releases them from the bonds beginning with āṇava and grants them liberation.

Passage 8

The manner in which Lord Shiva bestows knowledge and brings souls to realization.

Passage 9

Just as a king’s son, having been taken captive by hunters during his infancy and brought up practicing their lowly occupation, became deluded and lived without knowing either his father, the king, or himself; and just as the king, his father, came and saw his son, instructed him, saying, “You are not the son of a hunter; you are my son,” rescued him from the hunters, and had him restored and cared for as befitted him—so too, when He perceives that the soul, having become alienated from its true state, has fallen under the control of the hunters known as the five senses, lost its awareness, and suffers without knowing either itself or its Lord, He, the Lord called the Pure Consciousness, moved by the ripening of the Śiva-merit performed by that soul, graciously assumes the form of a Guru and comes forth. He enables it to know both itself and its Lord, destroys the power of the impurities that caused it to unite with the five senses, rescues it from them, transforms it into His own likeness, and graciously leads it to attain His sacred feet.*
