The Nature of Initiation

தீகைக்யாவது சிவபெருமான் குரு வாயிலாக நின்று அத்துவாக்களைச் சுத்திசெய்து மலமகற்றிச் சிவஞான முதிப் பித்து வீடடைவிக்கும் முறையாம்.

Initiation is the process by which Lord Siva, abiding through the Guru, purifies the paths, removes the impurities, imparts Siva-jnana, and enables one to attain liberation.

தீக்கித பெறும் மாணாக்கர் ஞான மார்க்கத்திற் குரிய வரும், கிரியாமார்க்கத்திற்குரியவரும் என இருவகைப்படுவர். இருதிறத்தவரும் உத்தமர் மத்திமர் அதமர் எனத் தனித் தனி முத்திறப் படுவர். அவருள் கற்றறிந்து சரியையாதி ஒழுக்க நெறியில் நிற்பவர் உத்தமர். கற்றறிந்தும் ஒழுக்க நெறியில் நில்லாதவர் மத்திமர். கற்றறியாமையும் ஒழுக்க நெறி நில்லாமையு முடையவர் அதமர். இத்தகையோருக்கு அவரவர் பக்குவத்திற் கேற்ப ஞானதீக்ஷை கிரியாதீக்ஷை என்னும் இரண்டனுள் ஒன்றைச் சிவபெருமான் குருவாயி லாக நின்று செய்தருளுவர்.

Those who receive initiation are of two kinds: those qualified for the path of knowledge and those qualified for the path of ritual action. Each of these two groups is further divided into three classes: the superior, the intermediate, and the inferior. Among them, those who have learned and stand firm in the disciplined path beginning with Chariya are the superior; those who have learned but do not remain in the disciplined path are the intermediate; and those who possess neither learning nor adherence to the disciplined path are the inferior. According to their respective levels of spiritual maturity, Lord Shiva, standing in the form of the Guru, graciously bestows upon such persons one of two initiations: Jnana Diksha or Kriya Diksha.

மாணாக்கனது சஞ்சிதவினை குருவின் திருநோக்காலும், அத்துவசுத்தியாலும் அழியும். பிராரத்தம் உடலோடழியும். ஆகாமியமும் ஆணவமும் ஞானத்தாலும் சிவோகம்பாவனை யாலும் அழியும். ஆதலால் வினை நீக்கத்திற்குக் குருவும் தீக்ஷையும் இன்றியமையாது வேண்டப்படும். தீணக்ஷ மாணாக் கனது பக்குவமும் ஆற்றலும் நொக்கிப் பலவகையாக அருளப்படுவதாம்.

The disciple’s accumulated karma is destroyed by the Guru’s sacred gaze and by the purification of the adhvas. Prārabdha karma is destroyed along with the body. Āgāmya karma and āṇava mala are destroyed through knowledge and meditation on Śivoham. Therefore, the Guru and initiation are indispensable for the removal of karma. Initiation is bestowed in various forms according to the disciple’s maturity and capacity.

சகலருக்குத் தீகைக்கு செய்து பாசத்தைக் கெடுக்கும் முறையாவது திருநோக்கம், பரிசம், வாக்கு, மானதம், நூலுப தேசம், யோகம், ஔத்திரி முதலாகப் பலவகைப்படும்.

The methods of initiation that sever the bonds of those in the Sakala state are of many kinds, including divine vision, touch, speech, mental initiation, scriptural instruction, yoga, and the fire ritual.
