The Avudaiyar beneath the Sivalinga, which represents Jnana Shakti, signifies Kriya Shakti. There is always a movement in the Sivalinga, which represents the transcendent expanse. That movement itself is Para Shakti. The Shakti of movement surrounds the Linga in order to destroy the bonds of souls. To indicate that this movement exists in the Linga, the Avudaiyar is arranged beneath it, encircling the Linga. The Gomukhi extending from one side of the Avudaiyar signifies that the souls are being regarded with divine grace.

[சைலம் - சிலையாலா கியது]
The Linga is in the form of the Pranava. In the forms of Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Mahesha, Sadashiva, Bindu, Nada, Shakti, and Shiva, it bestows blessings upon those who worship it. The Linga is none other than Shiva. The term Linga, which is a name for Shiva, is also conventionally applied, for the sake of spiritual maturity, to such supports as the Saila and others through which that Shiva becomes manifest for the meditation and worship of souls. [Saila— made of stone]
