Passage 1
Internal Religions
Passage 2
The internal religions are classified into six types: Pādāṇavāda Śaivism, Bhedavāda Śaivism, Śiva-samavāda Śaivism, Śiva-saṅkrāntavāda Śaivism, Īśvaravikāravāda Śaivism, and Śivādvaita Śaivism. Since there is little difference between Pādāṇavāda and Bhedavāda, it is also customary to count those two together as one and include Śuddha Śaivism, thereby considering the internal religions to number six.
Passage 3
The religions not mentioned here, as well as the branches of those mentioned, are included among these.
Passage 4
The Saiva Siddhanta religion alone stands supreme, transcending these four kinds of religions. †
Passage 5
In the Vedas and Agamas, all religions
Passage 6
The meaning of the text is also contained within it.
Passage 7
All religious scriptures are presented in condensed form in the Vedas and the Shaiva Agamas. Rudras, devas, and sages who did not understand the true meaning of the Vedas and Agamas interpreted some of their teachings according to the limits of their own understanding as Pāśupata, Pāñcarātra,
Passage 8
They elaborated them separately as the scriptures of the inner and outer religions, in works such as Sāṅkhya, Mīmāṃsā, Piṭaka, Lokāyata, and others. These works serve as instruments by which immature souls, conducting themselves according to their respective karma, gradually come to realize the True Reality. Therefore, the fact that he created them in this manner is itself the grace of the Primal Lord. These works are texts presenting preliminary doctrines.
Passage 9
As for why the Primal Lord expounded in the Vedas and Āgamas the doctrines of the various religions that differ from one another, it is because of the differences in qualification.*
Passage 10
Students studying in a school differ in many ways because their intellectual abilities vary from keen and advanced to dull and undeveloped. The teacher divides them into several classes and teaches each according to their respective capacity. Similarly, souls possess varying degrees of intellectual development, ranging from keen to dull, because of differences in their maturity. Therefore, in the Vedas and Āgamas he graciously expounded the doctrines of various religions according to their capacities—some dealing with subtle realities and others with gross realities.
Passage 11
Previously, with regard to those of extremely dull intellect who, believing worldly pleasure to be the supreme benefit and regarding sons and other things external to themselves as the soul, are immersed in sorrow and the like, they teach that worldly pleasure is not the supreme and certain benefit and that sons and the like are not the soul. However, because such persons lack the capacity to apprehend subtle truths and in order to establish certainty in their understanding, they teach that the gross body itself is the soul and that its destruction is the supreme and certain benefit.
Passage 12
Later, after conducting themselves according to the righteous practices taught therein and attaining a small degree of purification of mind, doubts arise in those who have come to question whether the body itself is the soul and whether its destruction is the certain benefit. To refute the view that the body and other such things are the soul, they teach the Buddha scriptures. In this manner, by teaching progressively, step by step, like a staircase, the absence of contradiction becomes understood.
Passage 13
The religions that come later are refuted by the religions that came earlier. That which is refuted is the pūrvapakṣa, and that which refutes it is the siddhānta. Since Shaiva Siddhanta stands by making all other religions its pūrvapakṣa, and since there is no religion that can make it its pūrvapakṣa, it alone is called the siddhānta. It is stated in the Ratnatraya, “Siddhanta alone is the Siddhanta; all that differs from it is pūrvapakṣa.”
