95. True Liberation

Passage 1

True Liberation

Passage 2

According to the truth taught in the Vedic and Agamic scriptures, what is true liberation, that is, attaining the sacred feet of Lord Siva? The soul and Siva have existed inseparably from beginningless time. Since the anava mala has, from beginningless time, obstructed the soul’s knowledge so that this inseparability does not become manifest, the soul, through the limitation caused by that mala, remains deluded, mistaking false pleasures for reality. When, through Siva’s grace, this delusion is removed—just as one gains clear vision when the film over the eye is removed —the soul perceives through Siva-jnana the inseparability of Lord Siva. In the ecstasy of Sivananda, it reaches the sacred feet of Lord Siva, who transcends all thirty-six tattvas.

Passage 3

The Vedas and Agamas alone are the scriptures; Shaiva Siddhanta alone is the religion.

Passage 4

Many blind men gathered together and, feeling an elephant with their hands, each described the characteristic of the limb he had touched as the characteristic of the elephant, thereby contradicting one another.

Passage 5

In the same way, a sighted man who had seen the entire elephant would know that all the characteristics stated by these blind men were each included among the characteristics he had perceived, and that those characteristics too were acceptable. Likewise, the religion in which there is no dispute saying, “This religion is acceptable; that religion is not,” and which, in due order, sees all religions as limbs contained within itself, is the foremost religion. Its religious scripture alone is truly scripture. Its distinguishing mark is the absence of conflict with the other religions.

Passage 6

What is that scripture? The Vedas and Agamas graciously revealed by the omniscient Lord Shiva for the sake of souls are those scriptures. The religion expounded and affirmed as supreme by those Vedas and Agamas is the true religion. Since that true religion accepts only the birthless and deathless Lord Shiva as God, and since there is no other scripture with which to formulate a contrary refutation of the scripture of that religion, it is called Shaiva Siddhanta. Since those Vedas and Agamas were composed through the grace of Lord Shiva, they are included within His grace.

Passage 10

this is it; that is not, without dispute or contradiction. By reason, all these are seen to converge in one place.

Passage 11

Because all these are sacred texts belonging to a single, established religious tradition, they are called the Vedas.

Passage 12

The two are subsumed beneath the feet of Hara.

Passage 14

The Vedas and the Agamas are the foundational texts of all other scriptures, graciously revealed by Supreme Shiva, who is the eternal and liberated One, * for the sake of souls †. Since all other texts are works that have expanded from these Vedas and Agamas, these two kinds of scriptures alone are specially referred to as “scriptures.”

The four Vedas—Ṛg, Yajur, Sāma, and Atharvaṇa—arose from the four sacred faces of Lord Shiva. The twenty-eight Āgamas arose from the upper, fifth face. The word “Veda” means that which serves as a means for knowing superior truths. “Āgama” means that which has come forth from the Supreme. In the word Āgama, “ā” signifies knowledge, “ka” signifies liberation, and “ma” signifies the destruction of impurity. Thus, it is also said to be called Āgama because it destroys the impurities of souls, causes knowledge to arise, and grants liberation. The twenty- eight Āgamas are: Kāmika, Yogaja, Cintya, Kāraṇa, Ajita, Dīpta, Sūkṣma, Sahasra, Aṃśumān, Suprabheda, Vijaya, Niśvāsa, Svāyambhuva, Āgnி ya.
